Coaches need to adjust their system to what is on the roster. They need to instill discipline and hold players accountable. So far Laviolette hasn't done that very well.

- Jsaquella

That is one thing I would say he needs to do better... call out specific players. I don't care if it's Giroux, Hartnell, Bryz... call them out in the locker room. It's his job as a coach to fix the broken parts.. and that includes egos and underachievers.

He obviously sucks!
- PLindbergh31

He could put up 80+ points this year in 48 games (on pace for 83). That would be good enough for a top 10 finish in scoring in an 82 game season most likely. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I feel bad for Flyers' fans who allow their bias to get in the way of appreciating what Crosby can due on the ice.

Don't you think he has addressed the issues with his players? Laviolette has proved he is a good coach with this team and in Carolina. Don't you think he has tried to make adjustments?

If Holmgren decides that Laviolette has lost this team he should fire him. I tend to think this team just isn't good enough. I like the style of game Laviolette's teams play. It's a lot of fun to watch and the last few year have been a blast (especially 09/10). Holmgren needs pick a direction and stay with it. If Laviolette is the coach of this team than he needs to get the players to make it work.

- Dkos

I have not seen much evidence in the teams systems play and strategy on the ice to suggest that he has tried to make adjustments. So I would say in terms of being flexible and trying to adjust how he wants the players to play to better suit the personel he has on the ice. He has failed miserably.
River hockey and undisciplined games lacking solid two way play such as some of the recent games against the Pens. Are a hell of a lot of fun to watch. But I'd prefer that the team win. And that they build towards being a top team.

Well, that poster seemed to be saying something just a tiny, itsy, microscopic bit more nuanced than 'I would not buy out Bryzgalov'. But we don't need to discuss that poster. He's literally actively posting on this thread, and to your posts. I'm going to step down from my role as post interpreter, in response to the scrutiny.

As for if I would know if you have a problem with me, I don't have a witty sarcastic response prepared. If you could be a bit insulted or take exception, it'd mean a lot to me.

i deleted the post because of the reason you cited and the post itself was not acceptable in tone. i'm on an iPad, so i don't know whether deletes go thru or not.

it's always interesting when people take up the mantle for others 10 posts down the line when the original point has often been lost in translation. if i'm still posting about this after all of this time, it's my fault. sometimes you have just drop it.

i've never had an issue with you, i just try to express my opinion, but if someone's being a jerkoff, i have no problem saying so.

Not recognizing his ability is different from not liking him. I don't care for the way he conducts himself, but he's a generational talent.

I love Emery and wish him well but I don't think I consider buying out Bryz to replace him with Emery. I don't see him as better than Bryz.
- Scoob

What if he's just as good at a third or even half the cap hit?

He's playing a system that doesn't maximize the strengths of his team and minimizes the weaknesses. Teams that are disciplined, play solid defense and stay patient have been eating the Flyers alive for the past two seasons.

It's not all the coach's fault, but this is similar what happened to him in Carolina after he won the Stanley Cup. They lost guys like Recchi, Weight and Cullen and he failed to adjust. He's married to his system and refuses to do more than make minor tweaks to it.

Now, I'm not saying the 2006-07 Hurricanes should have been Stanley Cup favorites. But they sure as Hell should have been a playoff team. Same goes for the 2007-08 Canes.

Even last night, as bad as the Sabres are, once they started playing disciplined hockey, they started to control the game. Just like the Pens did after the first period on Thursday, and the Rangers after tying the game at 2 on Tueday.

I'll say... I mean I don't think he was our savior or anything, but really, when you look at those numbers they're pretty eye-opening. People also forget, when the Flyers played the Sens in those playoff series, our offense literally went to sleep and died.
- Flyers_V88

They don't forget, they ignore because everyone knows that in Philly it's always the goalie's fault.

Always.

He's an incredible talent. I hate him when he plays the Flyers, love watching him when he plays other teams.

On a quick side-note however, someone much earlier on in the thread mentioned Roman Čechmánek...

Man, looking back now, did he get a brutal ride or what? Sure the game is a tad different now and our teams is completely different in terms of identity compared to then, but name another goalie who put up those kinds of numbers and is sent packing the following years...

I really wonder if had been given a fair shake, and we didn't play Ottawa those times in the playoffs in the early 2000's, what would have been...?

- Flyers_V88

It's hard to say.

Cechmanek played at the end of the "Dead Puck Era". Lots of goalies put up good numbers in that time frame.

Yup. I thought ditching Checko was a bad move regardless if he "showed up*" his team-mates.

*by showed up they really meant "called out the piss poor play of of the offense".

Yep, and I loved that he did that. They deserved it.

Cechmanek was a good goalie, he just got easily derailed. That said, the Flyers of that era didn't really lose because of him. But if the other team got him off his game or into his head, he could look atrocious.

Their can't be a single non WIP fan that would not trade multiple players straight up for Crosby right now.

As great as I think Giroux is I would move him in a second for Crosby.

Clearly the answer is to bring in more Rinaldo types to keep the other team from playing disciplined.

Hmmm...speaking of which...the losing streak started when Crazy Harry Z. got suspended...coincidence? They are 5-1 with him in the lineup. Coincidence?

He's played solidly. I like the smaller cap hit and would be interested in re-signing him this summer, but at around $2.5-$3mm. Not comfortable with much more than that.

That was how I remember him too.

I just wanted to make sure people had some perspective with respect to Cechmanek's numbers. Lots of goalies put up crazy good stats in that era. It was the way the game was played back then (tight checking, very defensive, etc).

More info I didn't know about. This type of stuff fascinates me. When I'm bored I pull up old Zep tours and read the news on them and look at the set lists etc... What a crazy time the 60's and 70's were for music. The crap today can't compare.

I'm not a huge Pearl Jam fan, the Ten album is one the best of the last 25 years imo.

- PLindbergh31

I agree today's music largely sucks. There's a few new bands I like, but they're not getting the airplay that bands used to get back in the day.

Now, if Robert Plant's not jerking us around and is serious about not having plans for summer 2014....
