I wonder if Pronger couldn't get healthy enough in the next year to get cleared to begin practicing and then be bought out by the flyers - jeffherrm
His career is over. If he can ever skate recreationally again, I'd be happy. |

That Carolina team didn't just have Kaberle. They had Hedican, Tverdovsky, Wesley, Hell even Wallin was solid at the first pass and had mobility.
And while he did get to the playoffs twice with the Islanders, he failed to do so for 3 years after winning the Stanley Cup in Carolina. - Jsaquella
i was always a Wallin fan. i think it's just because i like to say Waaaleeeen. seriously, though, he was a solid player. |

I'd like to see him next year in system that is balanced or at least mentions the word defend in a team meeting. Otherwise yea. I defended him to the hilt last year but this year he should already know the layout etc. he just never quite elevates the team to a win consistently like Bill said in comparison to lehtonen. For that contract he needs to be that type of player, maybe he's overworked I don't know... - JoeRussomanno
there may be some mental fatigue aspects here that we may not be factoring in. |

It's not reactionary at all. It's not working so they need to fix it or put the team in a position to succeed later on.
And I'm not scapegoating Lavy. Inconsistency in all areas, growing pains, Holmgren's failure to get the right pieces, players like G and Briere under-performing also play a part in why the team has struggled. What I am saying about Lavy is that he hasn't showed me why he should still be head coach. He's failed to adjust his system to certain teams, he's failed to tailor his style to the current roster and, quite frankly, I haven't seen any jam whatsoever.
Lavy is a solid coach and a good one with the right team but he no longer has that here. He is no longer the right coach for the team in my eyes. - NickTheKid87
Let's make a list of what you mentioned:
Extenuating circumstances:
Homer's failure to bring in "right" pieces,
Top players underperforming,
Growing pains (youth of players),
Inconsistency of effort all around,
Lavi's fault:
Not being able to make adjustments *
(* hard to verify, since we're not privy to the whiteboard and coaches meetings and conversations behind the bench, not to mention any observations we are making as fans are with untrained eyes, at best)
The next thing somebody will say here is that Lavi's "lost the room", and then we'll have everything we need to justify a fan-mandated coaching change.

You don't need to be in the locker room to see that he hasn't adjusted. It also doesn't take an insider to realize that the forwards' backchecking is god awful and has been since Lavy got here. |

Bill this has to have some effect...You cant compare the two:
Playing time:
Bryz:1,409:58
Lehtonen: 861:03
almost 600 minute difference....about ten games - Philly1980
Some of that is just poor coaching decisions . No one but Lavy thought starting Bryz against Florida the night after the crazy win over Pittsburgh was a good idea. And of course Bryz got shelled. |

Lavi has a hell of a track record with getting a lot out of some pretty mediocre players. His Carolina clubs weren't high on talent or even mobility, especially on the back end (Timonen >>>> Frank Kaberle), but the attacking style always caused problems for opponents and led to quite a bit of wins. He got the Isles to the PO's every year he was there, for Pete's sake.
Having ideal players in ideal roles was never a necessity for Lavi to succeed. Having players that recklessly jumped headlong into the fray was the only thing he ever required to win. The Flyers, for whatever reason, don't have enough of those kinds of players this year, even though it looks like they should on paper. - Tomahawk
Your first paragraph was what I have felt about Lavi - he took the Isles to the playoffs in two straight seasons. He then took over the Canes after 30 games in 2003-04. He replaced Paul Maurice who led the team to a 8-12-8-2 record before he was fired. They went 20-26-6-0 the rest of the way and missed the playoffs. Maurice coached at a .433 point clip while Lavi was coaching at a .442 over that season. The coaching change made little difference but Lavi did not have the benefit of a preseason camp with the team - something he had in 2001 & 2002 with the Isles.
After the wiped out season of 2004-05, the Canes won the Cup in 2006, as we know, with a 52-22-8 record. (No more ties - that 8 is OT or SO losses.) In the next two seasons, the Canes missed the playoffs. He then had the team at 12-11-2 after 25 games into 2008-09 before being let go and was replaced by his predecessor, Paul Maurice. Maurice guided the team to a 33-19-5 clip and the Eastern Conference Final.
Did Lavi lose his magic wand? Not sure because 2009-10 was surely magical in Philly after he took over, especially after the Flyers claimed Leighton off waivers.
I think his philosophy of coaching fits certain teams and not others. If he does not or cannot change it for this team, then he is the wrong coach for the job because it is evident this roster cannot play the way Lavi likes to run a team. |
