That Carolina team didn't just have Kaberle. They had Hedican, Tverdovsky, Wesley, Hell even Wallin was solid at the first pass and had mobility.
And while he did get to the playoffs twice with the Islanders, he failed to do so for 3 years after winning the Stanley Cup in Carolina. - Jsaquella
Almost. The third year was cut short and Maurice took over. Not sure if there was a player that came back from injury (a la Gonchar when Bylsma took over for Therrien in Pittsburgh) that helped or not, but he missed the playoffs twice after the Cup win. Maurice then took them to the ECF.

I think his philosophy of coaching fits certain teams and not others. If he does not or cannot change it for this team, then he is the wrong coach for the job because it is evident this roster cannot play the way Lavi likes to run a team. - Flyskippy

You don't need to be in the locker room to see that he hasn't adjusted. It also doesn't take an insider to realize that the forwards' backchecking is god awful and has been since Lavy got here. - NickTheKid87
So, Lavi must be the only head coach in NHL history to put "backchecking optional" up on the whiteboard before every game, is that what you're saying? |

I stand semi-corrected.
My hope is that Laviolette has success as long as he is the team's head coach. My issues with him are known, but winning would cure all ills. |

I think if the forwards can be taught defensive responsibility, add a puck mover, maybe move a stay at home guy they'll come out next year and challenge for a division title (if that's what it'll be called with realignment). - NickTheKid87
There are enough defensive type coaches on the team already that can teach them defensive responsibility. Chief, who has done a good job with the PK, and Paddock can definitely do that. Terry Murray is not the answer! |

Lavi's fault:
Not being able to make adjustments *
(* hard to verify, since we're not privy to the whiteboard and coaches meetings and conversations behind the bench, not to mention any observations we are making as fans are with untrained eyes, at best)
The next thing somebody will say here is that Lavi's "lost the room", and then we'll have everything we need to justify a fan-mandated coaching change. - Tomahawk
I don't think we can quite divine whether or not Laviolette has lost the players or not, but make no mistake: The Flyers' record in the recent past (two years?) against New Jersey, Boston, and NYR is not an aberration at this point.
It is a pretty real trend that has shown zero signs of reversing course so far this season. I don't see how anyone can dispute that. |

I'd be surprised if the Flyers used either of their amnesty buyouts. - mayorofangrytown
Why wouldn't they buy out Briere this summer? It costs them very little money ($3.3m spread over four years) and frees up more than 10% of the 2013-14 salary cap. |

Yeah, it's semantics at this point. Had he continued in that season, do the Canes make the ECF - let alone the playoffs? I don't think so.

Seems like that is what most posters on this board are saying. For some reason, many believe that Lavy is all attack and no defensive responsibility at all. |

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that he's responsible for teaching and getting guys to back check consistently. It's not like it's something that happens a few games here and there, it's nearly every game. The team defense is an issue and has been an issue and he has shown minimal signs of trying to improve it. |

I would only want Murray as an interim and then go after and young up and comer this offseason. If they want to make a more permanent move, then aim higher. |
