I guess I shouldn't be amazed that someone would think of trading Giroux because you know.. last season he was a top 3 player in this game..this season he is not ..lets trade him !
In my opinion the strongest thing this team has going for it is its core of young forwards.
Giroux, Voracek, Schenn, Simmonds, Couturier, Rinaldo, Read, Hartnell (30 is not young compared to the others). The only 2 players I would say should not be on the trading block are the first 2. As much as like the others for the right deal I would move them.
To me the Flyers need the following before thinking about moving Giroux or Voracek:
1. A clear vision for the team be it youth, win in the next few seasons, beat people up, defense first..whatever..they need to establish an viable identity for the talent they have.
2. I think once that is defined you have to look at if Lavy is the right coach. None of us know what is happening behind closed doors but he has proven to have a short shelf life. WIn right away then slide from there. I also wish he would play the players that are effective.
3. Number 1 and Number 2 dman. At this point in his career I know you cant view Timmo as a number 1 and im fairly sure you cant even expect him to be a number 2.
4. Long term goalie solution. I dont hold bryz accountable for this season but rather I hold management and the team for putting him in overused situations where he is constantly stopping odd man rushes.
5. Corey Perry..Mean, physical with a ton of skill and a 50 goal scorer. |

So, what you're really saying is that you didn't enjoy Claude Boivin's career?
Recently, the Flyers seem to have begun scouting the college ranks a bit more (which makes sense, given Homer's own pedigree as a player). I applaud that move.
I agree with you, with respect to drafting Euros. When they do draft them, they seems to either not know how to develop them or have different expectations of a kid from Europe as opposed to, say, a kid from Saskatoon. - johndewar
Haha. First I read Boivin and laughed. My second thought was that you could have nested the names of a dozen guys instead...and it wasn't as funny
But I agree...their approach with college players is perfect. They have the money just need to an manage the contracts. And you get a Wellwood or Harry Z then great. If you get a Pither no biggie. And you might just find a Matt Read. |

Agree100%. But then again we need to draft these goons to uphold our stupid thug reputation from the 70's. And that's another thing, how come flyers teams from that era are known as bullies? Those teams had a ton of skill and one of the best goalies of all time! Pisses me off. Their were plenty of really tuff teams at that time. We font win those cups without parent and the skill too. - SMS4016
It was a good symbiotic relationship.
The Schultz's, Kelly's, Dupont's and Saleski's gave a lot of room for the Clarke's and Barber's to shine. We probably don't win those two Cups without both.
Having the best goalie in the league didn't hurt either. |

Perry's going to get somewhere between $8-10 million per on the open market. 7 years easy. Not sure I want to commit to that.
Edit: And Perry only topped 37 goals once (50 in 2010-11). Also never had over 76 points aside from that year as well. |

He was, but you do you're own internal scouting, too. They had Laughton high on their board, because they immediately made the pick. There was no waiting for them at all.
I'm not talking Central Scouting's board or the ISS board, I'm talking the team's board. - Jsaquella
Oh I understand what you meant. I was just questioning the general opinion. I'm sure the Pens were drooling when we passed by him.
And I like Laughton, just think its the same problem we always have with too many centers and making someone a winger who doesn't want to be. I'm not even counting Briere either...just G, Schenn and Coots. |

Agreed.. I just find it funny that nationally "the bullies" is all thats ever talked about? Clarke too. How hilarious that parent is an after thought. Or their overall skill. Then today's players talking about the bullies as the identity of this franchise. I call balderdash! I'd rather have skill with great goaltending with team toughness. |

Over the past 5 seasons he has averaged 35 goals.
He is young and plays a mean game.
If we throw out that they need dmen first I can't think of an available forward I would rather have. |

Perry would make any team better but with guys having to be locked up long term within the next few years (Giroux, Couturier, Schenn, Read) I would be wary of signing a guy to a huge deal. |

Totally agree with that, im basing my signing of Perry on the fact that one or some combo of Couturier , Schenn or Read is moved to get that number 1 dman. |

If they rated Laughton ahead of Maata, then they should have picked Laughton. - Jsaquella
Everybody's fixated on them taking Laughton before Maata, but I have the feeling the one that's really going to come back to haunt them is taking Couturier before Hamilton in terms of current and future needs.
Sometimes I find myself scratching my head over them taking Sbisa over MDZ, too, but then I remember that they were basically drafting on behalf of the Ducks there.
If they have the top pick and they rate Jonathan Drouin ahead of Seth Jones, they should take Drouin. - Jsaquella
Even if they picked Jones, they'd probably find some way to bungle his development and turn him into an Erik Johnson. |

The Flyers were always enamored with the prototypical two way, grinding, 2nd line center. From Bridgman, to Sutter, to Ricci, to Richards, to Laughton.. |

how far away is the expansion to 32 teams? - Marc D
I obviously do not know, but were I to guess I'd think that in less than 3 years there will be 32 teams.
they still have problems with fairness as to a playoff berth with the 16/14 split
Right. The response to that is "tough luck." It is what it is. |

I think this idea is being blown way out of proportion. We're not talking about the #19 overall pick or a 2nd rounder, we're talking about a top 3 pick in the draft. I think they'd take extra care of a prospect of Jones caliber. He can't be compared to Sbisa. |

Jsaq actually made a good point last week too... If we got perry that would move simmonds to the 3rd line. Don't think I'd want that. |

Guys that got drafted after Ricci that year:
Jagr, Derian Hatcher, Keith Tkachuk, and .......(wait for it).......Marty Brodeur.
Other interesting names in that first round with ties to the Flyers: John Slaney, Turner Stevenson, Mark Greig (the Whale!), and the immortal Shawn Antoski. |

Remember, they rushed Pitkanen into the lineup, too. While he had enough game to play at the NHL level, he was far from a mature enough person to handle the responsibility of carrying the team from the back end. |
