Welp, he was interim GM and head coach when he was with the Whale in the early to mid-90's, so holding both roles wouldn't be completely foreign to him. - johndewar
Exactly, though my post was more joke than hope. |

So only a few first ballot hall of fame players and arguably the best goalie ever.
Pitbull! - opeth_pa
The draft is always a crapshoot, hell they Flyers didn't grab Bobby Clarke till the 2nd round, Montreal passed on him 3 times!!! Heck they were dominant in the late 70s, they may have won 10 in a row if you add Clarke to that team.
Hindsight is always 20/20, I'm sure the Flyers wished they had taken Scott Stevens over Ron Sutter in 1982 and 6 teams are kicking themselves for passing on Forsberg in '91. Not to mention how much Ottawa regrets what they did to their franchise by taking Daigle.
All in all, Holmgren has done pretty well with his 1st rounders: Pitkanen, Carter, Richards, Downie (not bad for the 30th pick), Giroux, JVR, Sbisa, Couturier. Its a track record a lot of scouting directors and GMs would love to have.

I said the same thing. It fell well short of expectations due to the lack of video support.
Know what the best part of that post with all the videos was? But the standard that he offered, supported by the videos. Every single NHL defenseman is a puck moving defenseman with the cirteria he offered. It was hysterical. - MJL
You have to take into consideration that this was a rebuttal of sorts to those who claim the Flyers D are immobile and incapable of moving the puck. The video evidence certainly supported my point that this is not the case. Do they have elite puck movers? Aside from Timonen when healthy (and younger), no...and Carle wasn't that either, but they do however, have guys that can make your average puck moving play out of the zone with regularity, contrary to what some believe.

I hope Homer names himself interim coach so we can get 4-sentence bashes of him instead of just 2. - Flyskippy
My only fear there is Holmgren may actually kill one of these guys the next time they turn over the puck because they refused to make the safe play! |

I've been thinking about Briere's NMC and I can't see him waiving it. If he isn't traded that pretty much forces the Flyers to buy him out to get cap space. So Briere pockets $3.3m over the next four years.
Then he can go out as FA and pick whichever team offers the best deal and lets him stay close to his family. And I don't think it's a stretch to suggest a team will give him a two-year, $6.7m deal. Combined with the buyout Briere would be doubling his income over the $5m he would be paid if he allowed himself to be traded. - Feanor
How about if those interested teams are Calgary and Dallas? |

Don't think it would be crazy at all... If someone like montreal offered like subban, prospect, and a couple #1 picks I think you'd have to at least consider It. I like g but I don't think he's the best in the league. Yeah he had a 90 point season, but do did briere. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if Tavares winds up as good as g. I'd still take Crosby, malkin, stamkos,etc... Over g. Not being argumentative just being realistic. G could be great but he could also be just pretty good. G hasn't taken any games over and dominated yet? Just saying - SMS4016

agreed - exlund
I've never said otherwise. Actually heading into the season, I said the Flyers defensive group wasn't as bad as many feared.
The fact that they're playing a system that exposes the team's weaknesses so readily is an issue. |

Very subjective.
I was saying, for example, if you have a forward rated higher on your board but you need defense, don't pick the D-man you've rated lower because of the need.
Always select the best player available regardless of position, even if it gives you an excess at that position. - 77rams
Not saying the Flyers don't come with a comprehensive list, but they certainly seem to fall in love with one prospect every year that they think they have a chance at and take him no matter what the draft board looks like, even if they could probably trade down and still get them (Richards, Laughton). |

They definitely aren't incapable of being adequate in moving the puck. No NHL defense is. That's really my point. - MJL
And mine I suppose...but you used a lot less words and no video. I probably coudl have saved a few hours of my time. |

hey Jsaq, next time you post an encyclopedic volume like that, could you include a handful of youtube videos of yourself recording hockey plays on your television? Thanks. - BulliesPhan87
Why would we want to see vids of Jsaq recording vids on his tv? I'd rather the video contained what was actually on the TV itself. |

Chalk this one up as the WORST TRADE in Holmgren's tenure. Up there with Sestito for Chaput (Memorial Cup MVP). |

Wow. Not sure.. Everthing considered age contracts and all. Don't know if I'd do it only because might be able to get More of a puck mover plus added on but I guess if homer did something like that I'd understand why and I wouldn't jump off a bridge. |

No, I meant if Dan takes the buy out and expects to make even more money by accepting an interested team's offer of a two year, 6.7 mil contract (the example given). That plus the B/O $ nets him more than he's making now.
It only works for him if a team interested in paying him that kind of money is close enough where he can easily reach out to his kids. Otherwise, he has a hard decision to make.
I say give him a list (if there is one) of interested teams and see if he's be willing to waive before he's shown the door. |

He won't make $6.7. I think (hope) the person said 2 years, $6-7M (cap hit $3-$3.5M). He'd still be sitting pretty. I'm more concerned if Pittsburgh or NJ gives him that kind of money, or even less if he wants to stay in the area.
I still say do a *wink* *wink* "trade" to a team and include a 4th round pick, have that team buy him out, and resign him. It's no more collusion that the offer sheet decline/trade scenarios. |
