You know, other teams are able to play an aggressive forechecking style and make it work.
It's just the Flyers don't do it well at all.
How many times do the forwards get in deep when they really had no chance on a play?
Or the D man pinches with little hope of getting the puck?
If the other team has solid control of the puck, too many times the Flyers come at them, and are late and then end up chasing the play.
You can have three forwards in deep when you have the puck or have at least a great chance of getting it.
If they want to chase it all game long, then bring up some of the speedy skaters from the Phantoms.
Better yet, use some brains when to go all out and when to drop back.
I can't believe that the coach is telling them to always chase the puck even when they have no shot at getting possession. - Marc D

How can you not? It happens game after game, with a wide range of players. It's painfully obvious. Especially if you know Laviolette's history and his system. - MJL
I know both his history and his system and I still don't believe it for and instant.
"OK guys, I want to see three ill timed line changes this period that'll lead to odd man rushes in addition to taking another four brain dead penalties". |

I'm curious then. Because the example you've given, really has nothing to do with the system. What is Laviolette's system?

Not even close to what I said. They are being told to execute within the system. In the opening minutes of the last game against the Devils. Nik Grossmann aggressively pinches in. And they chip the puck past him for a two on one. Grossmann did not wake up and decide that he's Bobby Orr. Same thing happened throughout the game. And has been happening all Season. - MJL
So you believe Grossmann is ordered to pinch even if he knows he had no chance of keeping the puck in or knows he had no back support. |

Blindly do as I say even though it has zero chance of succeeding. |

Yes, the Flyers are an over aggressive team. The defenseman are taught and told to gamble on the puck and apply pressure to keep the puck in, on plays up the wall on the other teams breakouts. It is not a read and react situation. It is the Forward responsibility to back up the defenseman. Watch tonight or re watch the last Devils game. They counter it with a Center breakout.

In Laviolette's eyes it has every chance of succeeding. He's won a Cup playing it. His system has no prayer of working without full commitment or any hesitation on the forecheck or on the pinch. It is a pure pressure, attack system.

I think "gamble" is an over exaggeration.
And if the forward lazily floats back to cover, that's Laviolette's fault? |

So the answer is to acquire players who are more non-committed? |

When it keeps happening game after game, with player after player. Yes it is his fault. So he has two choices. Correct those mistakes, or change style of play. Laviolette has done neither. "Gamble" is not an over exaggeration. It fits Laviolette's style perfectly.

Harry Z, Wellwood, maybe others.
Speed would help with Lavi's system.
Look at Le Habs. Lots of speedy smaller players.
Although their speedsters have more offensive skill then Harry Z and Wellwood. |

You've been telling me that you know Laviolette's system. I'm explaining that if you hesitate on the forecheck or on the pinch, you'll be late getting there. That's why I'm telling you that it's not a read and react. Unless the opposition clearly has posession of the puck and is skating it out. Then obviously the defense is to retreat. But when ever the puck is along the wall, and up for grabs, he wants his defenseman up on the play.
The real answer with this team, is to change styles of play.

To change style of play is the real answer.
They have shown they are too stupid, not talented enough on the back end, can't pay attention to detail, and inconsistent to play any kind of pressuring aggressive scheme.
They should change styles, because this group cant play that way. Not really a compliment... |
