I posted on the Senator thread that they should approach the Flyers and see about doing a straight up deal Lehner for Voracek. Lehner is arguably the best developed young goalie to come along since Cary Price. In Sweden, he is regarded as a possible successor to Lundqvist on the national team.

Anyway, Senator fans said I was nuts and Ottawa would never do that deal, they would want more than Voracek.

So, may as well give Flyer fans a chance to reciprocate and say the same thing from the opposite point of view.

Sens arent trading Lehner.....if they trade anyone it would be Bishop. They are also in a position where they dont have to trade anyone right now.

No doubt the Flyers could use an upgrade on the blueline, but look at New Jersey's. Salvador, Tallinder, Volchenkov, Zidlicky, Greene, and Larson are no more mobile than the Flyers group and are actually older on average. It is becoming the new lazy argument for the Flyers struggles just like goaltending use to be the go to reason for failure.

The difference is that all 4 lines in NJ play as 1...not 18 individuals

Its a tough move because of how well Voracek has fit in... how well he is doing, and the fact that Lehner has never really played as a true starter. Its a big risk.. HOWEVER, if they were to buy out Bryz, move Voracek for Lehner, and get rid of Briere via trade or buyout.. and say added Perry... i think Id be on board.

Adam Larson is young (he's only 20) and will probably be a good for a long time.

But your point is well made; NJ's blue line is nothing special.

Come the off season they are going to need to do a big deal. Lehner has started the last four games. Bishop has played really well. Anderson is coming back as soon as next week.

why? They are in a position where Lehner can still spend time in Bingo and develope no need to rush him while Anderson is playing so well and Bishop picks up the slack during injury or backup duty. The whole team is young and talented, and only getting better. They would be more apt to move one of the plethora of defensemen they have than a Goalie.

I could see if they were struggling or they had huge holes to fill...but they don't. Of course any team will make deals to get better...but the Sens dont NEED to make any deals.

Steps for firing a coach.

1. GM issues a statement, a vote of confidence in the coach.
2. Ownership issues similar statement. Says coach will be around for long time.
3. Announcement that coach has been relieved of duties.
4. Press conference to name new coach.

Sounds very similar to the Jeff Carter trade.

Holmgren: Hey Jeff, we want you to be a cornerstone of our franchise. How does 11 years sound?
Carter: Wow, that's great. Thanks for believing in me.

...months later...
Carter: Hey Mr. Holmgren, I'm hearing rumblings I may be traded.
Holmgren: Jeff, that's absurd. We signed you to that deal because we believe in you.
Carter: Thanks, that means a lot to me.
Holmgren: Glad we cleared that up; here's your plane ticket to Columbus.

Not a bad idea, but who was available that fit that description?
- Flyskippy

if we look at some of the young tenders who've been moved the last couple of yrs, that might provide some clue. WSH had 3 young guys, maybe schneider, bernier, bishop. guys of that ilk.

Also, I'd go hard for Jacob Markstrom. I see him as a future Rinne.

Too much emphasis on drafting Dmen and goalies. Who cares where they come from? Yes, it'd be nice to grow their own but the direction of the 70's & 80's mean jack squat right now. Where they're headed now is all that matters.
- Flyskippy

it's much more expensive to trade for them or go thru the FA mkt. a certain % of plyrs in this category -top 4 D and starting goalie - need to come from the org.

I understand that. NJ plays with much more structure and discipline than the Flyers do. Their forwards are much more responsible defensively as well.
- PLindbergh31

Then to me that is a clear sign that the problem is the coach, not the players. Either he is not stressing defensive awareness which means he should be fired or he is preaching defensive responsibility and the players are tuning him out which means he should be fired. Briere has been the laziest player defensively on this team for awhile now yet still gets ice time, so it must not be that important to the coach.

I can't conceive of Dale Tallon moving Markstrom.

It's a little bit of everything. Coach/Players/GM. Everyone has equal share of the blame imo. Laying blame at the feet of any one person is being shortsighted.

Briere has seen his ice time reduced on a few occasions. The game Wed in NJ he only played 10 minutes and change, as well as the game against Winnipeg a few weeks ago he played around 8 minutes.

Briere is a pro athlete making a ton of money, if he's being lazy fans have to hold him accountable. Laviolette can't bench everyone who is playing poorly, he won't be able to ice a team.

Agree, but I'd do my darndest. He's the other other one we could have taken with the Eminger pick aside from Carlson.

Not to be a jerk, but the problem with goalies in Philly is the way they are treated by the fanbase. Say what you will, every goalie in the world is not soul of stone Ron Hextall. Hockey players in general constantly give votes of confidence to their tenders. Reason: they need it. Keep hating Philly, keep hating.

Good luck prying a top pairing defenseman or goalie from another team...Shea Weber ring a bell?

You could simply thank the residents of PA for helping you keep your team in Pittsburgh.

We ready to be 3-19-1 vs the Devils and Rangers since the beginning of last season?

Hope so, because obviously nothing's changed.

Completely agree! No more buying players in a cap driven market place...tried with Shea Weber and failed miserably...what makes anyone think that will change?

There are at least 3 people influencing their direction: Snider, Homer, & Lavi. They can't all be on the same page if the owner is dictating to the GM and the owner & GM are dictating to the coach. Another reason the coach needs to change: either the game plan or the person himself.

I am curious to (but will never) know what would've happened in 2011 had the Flyers stuck with Bob & got a backup instead of signing Bryz.

- Flyskippy

I think the result would be the same maybe worse. Bryz is better than Bob, the only way I see things different is if we used Bryz's money to offer more to Weber to the point matching the offer was not an option.
