I don't know...folks are happy with Cizikas and Martin. They don't score a whole lot, but they're noticeable and you can easily rattle off at least two or three things they do very well in their current roles. I'd be hard pressed to name one area of the game where Joensuu excelled while he was here. It's fine to throw him in the lineup for a few games and see what's what...but it's hard to argue he showed even flashes of being anything more than a depth player in his last go-around. - UIF
But some players are depth players, I would personally rather have home grown depth players in our line up then, the reasoners, pandawfuls, Sims, Mcammonds, & Vasiceks (R.I.P.) year in & year out.
The biggest problem with this team is that 90% of the franchises have 4 lines that are for the most part set, they lose one guy on a line & they either promote from another line, promote from the minors or get a free agent.
We have 2/3 of 1 line set & the other 10 positions are up in the air come training camp. Will we have a second line center or will Franz be put there, who is going to play on MM & JT line, what crap will we throw on the 4th line? Players like Jesse Joensuu would get a better look & look better if their insertion into the lineup wasn't viewed as someone coming in to make a team altering impact. We assume he is going to play on the third line where Gremlin was, but do we know for sure? nope.

I consider this a 'show me' period for Joensuu so I do think he should get an extended look. He's a big body (which we don't have many of) who can skate okay. In half a season of action Joensuu put up 6 goals. Not great but I think for a rookie season, 12-15 goals in limited ice time isn't too bad. At 25 years of age, he should be maturing into whatever it is he'll eventually become. Based on his performance in the Finish league and the IIHF tourney, we should have a cautious optimism that he may be improved from his last go around. Even if he'd match his 12 goal pace from last year, he'd be on a better goal scoring pace than Okposo or Bailey.

How does it look for housing Isles? Staple said changes in blueprints right now to improve bowl. |

me too...now while I agree he has work to still do on his defensive but no way is he a liability... he defense is average...which is an improvement. what he needs to work on is teachable... |

I wish i could see the games in person, You can watch a player so much better at the arena then over a webcast.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with giving Joensuu a last shot based on how he played in Europe...said as much when they signed him. But I wouldn't say at all that he was good in his last stint, and probably not even serviceable. He put up 5 points in the World's and from what people say he looked good, sure, but his time on the Isles certainly didn't earn him the second chance. Put it this way...Colin McDonald is about what I expect out of an extra player that you plug into your roster to fill an available third/fourth-line spot after you take care of the rest of your roster. Joensuu wasn't as noticeable or effective in his 60 games as McD has been in his 20 or so. So, sure, throw him in there and see what happens. But I'm not going to re-imagine his time here and act like this return has been a long time coming or anything. |

The problem is he seems very lazy on the other side of the puck, he does a lot of coasting and unless he's battling for the puck along the boards he doesn't use his body to separate the attacking player from the puck.

sounds like a lot of players on the current islanders roster....I think he has maturity issues more than effort issues |

I have no doubt in my mind he will come to the NHL eventually and put the puck in the net... I just wish he wasn't like our first line, JT & the boys can put the puck in the net at will, but they are on the other end of a goal VERY often as well.

I agree that he doesnt hit and back check... His passing isnt that bad, may just seem that way cuz he is trying to high-risk passes, trying spring Moulson or JT...
Just generalizing your statment... Same thing goes for Mouslon, PAP... They dont do these things either... But PAP not playing with JT is putting up points... So you just dont know. Boyes also isnt asked to play a physical role playing on the 1st line. I think he can hit but chooses not too... (Ive seen a bunch of times this year, players go to hit Boyes and Boyes stand them up, so he has strength)
Not all players can do everything... Fans could score more then he does but he is asked to be a defensive forward so he doesnt take extra risks... He might be able to play a 3rd line role if they asked him to play a more defensive game but thats not what they are asking him to do.
I think a lot of players could do a lot more on offense or a lot more on defense but are asked (or told) to play this way or that way for the betterment of the team...
I just wish they would ask Okposo to go home... - Bags502
ding ding ding. That's why his passing sucks. High risk passes and suck are interchangeable. It's the NHL not puck shot at Long Beach arena. |
