I value defenseman much higher than a forward. I don't know what was offered but getting offense isn't hard to do so I would be willing to part with any to get a franchise guy like Weber.
- stveshdy

I value players, regardless of position. If you trade a good forward, you can get a good defenseman.

The difference is, defensemen take time and effort to develop, so teams are more loathe to trade a good one.

he would need the draft picks to recoup those players. I can understand not wanting to shed the players and the picks but not being unwilling to part with just the players. The Flyers can replace them through the draft. Unfortunately they cannot or have been unable to draft a defenseman of Weber's caliber.
- JoeRussomanno

I doubt he had the choice, outside of signing the offer sheet and forcing the issue.

Forwards are a dime a dozen IMO. Not many defenseman in the league that are on elite level like a Weber. I'm a big believer that you need to play defense to win a championship.

If I was drafting and their were two players of equal value defenseman or forward, I'm taking the defenseman.

I'd move Read. I like the guy, but he is 26 so what you see is what you get, there is no real upside, also he will be in line for a huge raise in 14-15 and it will be hard to do with Giroux, Couturier and Schenn all starting new deals that year and finally, they really need help on D badly, especially a durable puck mover like Bouwmeester.

amazing how he gets bashed, (in bold), but he logs big minutes & is very durable, size, mobility, shot and 29 years old. I guess it's more along the lines for what you have to give up, but would he be such a bad option?

Speaking of Weber at least I will enjoy watching Nashville pay him 13 million in July after missing the playoffs and only playing 24 home games.

I would not be surprised if their attendance also takes a tumble next year if they miss the post season. I think they may very well come to regret matching the offer rather than accepting a trade.

He has a no movement clause, he's not going anywhere, even so a 2nd for him & his $ is a no as well.

I believe if Suter had re-signed they could of let Weber walk and take the picks. However, you can't allow your two best defenseman to walk in the same summer.

No he wouldn't. Look the guy has had the misfortune of playing on some really crappy teams but so what. All he does is show up every night, log big minutes, play on the top pair, be the first D man out to kill penalties, skate really well and chips in some offense.

Flyers fans become too attached to their own players. Matt Read is a 26 year old 2nd line winger whos top end is 25-30 goals and 55-60 points. While a very good skater, he is undersized and the torn stomach muscle worries me as its that type of injury which really hurt the career of Mike Renberg.

If you can get a top 4 defenseman for a 2nd line winger I think you need to make the deal, especially when your D is as thin as the FLyers is.

Read and 2nd rounder, nope!

I don't think JBo is worth that price. I would look elsewhere. JBo is a decent defenseman but I'm not in love with his game for that price and cap hit.

Honestly, I just think the Flyers can get a younger defenseman for that asking price.

That offer would of been one to think about if they didn't resign Kimmo.

You can play defense as a team and win titles. The reason that a cash strapped team in Nashville decided to match on Weber is that he's as rare a species as a Crosby or Malkin.

If you can have a 20-25 goal scoring shut down center, it's also a pretty rare species. Now, if Couturier can be that, you don't trade him for Keith Yandle. He's had a dreadful offensive season, but it's kind of a weird year, plus he's only 20.

You might not win a Stanley Cup without a good number one defenseman, but it's also rare to see a team lift a Stanley Cup without a top notch shut down center, too.

I think Jbo paired with a seasoned Luke Schenn could be a heckuva pairing tho.

You value JBo. I'm not a fan of his at all. He can skate the puck and eat up minutes based on his history but at that cap hit and price is it worth it? This team isn't going anywhere this year. I would look to be selling players not adding JBo.

Have to be strong defensively and down the middle no doubt about it. I just think its easier to find another Couturier than a Weber. Thats why I would deal him plus picks to get Weber. We don't know what was really offered so its hard to say one way or the other.

This! I still can't believe they matched that. The lockout after paying him the bonus money etc must have ruined tehir bottom line.

I'd be OK with adding Bouwmeester because he's a very solid player who eats a ton of minutes and doesn't get hurt.

Trading Read for him isn't exactly trading a kid for an old man, either. Bouwmeester is 29. Read will be 27 before Bouwmeester is 30.
