Have to be strong defensively and down the middle no doubt about it. I just think its easier to find another Couturier than a Weber. Thats why I would deal him plus picks to get Weber. We don't know what was really offered so its hard to say one way or the other. - stveshdy
Not saying that it's not easier to land a Couturier.
But I seriously doubt that it was as simple as Couturier and a couple picks. I think it'd take Couturier, Schenn and two first rounders.
Couturier has a ton of potential, Weber's a franchise defenseman at age 26 |

I'd be OK with adding Bouwmeester because he's a very solid player who eats a ton of minutes and doesn't get hurt.
Trading Read for him isn't exactly trading a kid for an old man, either. Bouwmeester is 29. Read will be 27 before Bouwmeester is 30. - Jsaquella
I think Read is the most underrated player on the roster. The kid plays two way hockey and helps out on special teams if needed. He is versatile in the fact he can play C or W. His next contract should still be affordable. I personally would trade Read & 2nd Rounder for JBo. |

Would you make that trade?
Couturier, Schenn, 2- 1st rounders for Weber? |

Not if I was the Flyers. I would have traded JvR, one of the other two and 2 1sts last season or at the draft. But now, I wouldn't. |

BOXING ALERT....
i know there are tons of people who couldn't care less about boxing, but the bradley fight on HBO last nite is def worth a watch. it'll be replayed many times in the next few days. i'll just say that if there were more like this one, people would care about the sport. |

At least he was under 23 games. 23 would start the clock for UFA. |

His next contract will be around $3-$3.5mm or so, in all likelihood. He'll probably get more than Couturier and Schenn because he's a UFA.
But Bouwmeester isn't a rental. He'd be here for a few years at least. |

I agree I wouldn't make that trade now. I would be willing to trade Schenn or Couturier for the right defenseman at the deadline. Most teams aren't looking to trade away players when making a run for the cup so it may be better to wait during the summer and see whats out there.
The other choice is for the Flyers to completely change their style of play b/c right now this defensive core can't handle playing Lavi's system. Just not enough mobility on the blueline for my liking. They dont have a defenseman who can skate and create with the puck on his stick. |

If Timonen wasn't re-signed then I would look into it but JBo isn't worth that cap hit IMO. Doesn't he have a NMC or NTC anyways? I thought he wouldn't come to Philly? |

Honestly, I just think the Flyers can get a younger defenseman for that asking price.
That offer would of been one to think about if they didn't resign Kimmo. - stveshdy
i agree. i'd rather see them go after a high end d prospect from a contender |

Just saying. Yandle would be awesome here I think playing lavas style. Pair him with grossman or schenn |

I would trade Read and a 2nd rounder for Yandle but I don't think that offer gets it done. |

It's very hard for the Flyers to give up this years 1st knowing they are going to have a great pick.

no doubt. and i'm a fan of keith yandle, i think he'd be a great fit. just tough to justify moving that pick. it would have to be a pretty special player, imo, when you consider the state of the flyers' farm system |

You can play defense as a team and win titles. The reason that a cash strapped team in Nashville decided to match on Weber is that he's as rare a species as a Crosby or Malkin.
If you can have a 20-25 goal scoring shut down center, it's also a pretty rare species. Now, if Couturier can be that, you don't trade him for Keith Yandle. He's had a dreadful offensive season, but it's kind of a weird year, plus he's only 20.
You might not win a Stanley Cup without a good number one defenseman, but it's also rare to see a team lift a Stanley Cup without a top notch shut down center, too. - Jsaquella
