They could go that route as well but there is no guarantee they get anything the following year thats any better.
- stveshdy

True. At the same time, they get a year closer to seeing if Stolarz is ready, and the possible crop of FA goalies is better than this one is shaping up than this summer, especially if the rumors that Howard will be re-signed in Detroit.

Right now, the UFAs in 2014 are Lundqvist, Halak, Hiller, Miller and Corey Crawford. That's a more appealing group to me than Mike Smith and Backstrom.

I agree. Chances those goalies aren't re-signed is slim IMO. Hiller is the only goalie I see being a real option.

You can't do that under the new CBA I heard.

There are apparently plenty of goalies who are going to be available at the trade deadline or in the off season. I don't think it's a real stretch to think you could pull in one of them to put up the same stats at a reduced cost.

He's certainly not carrying the team and the team's given him spotty support at best. I'd certainly have to be considering it but it would have to come in a series of moves that upgraded my defense and required me to free up cap space. Otherwise I'm probably torn this off season. If I don't think i can make the moves to make this team a Cup contender in the off season why wait a year?

- mayorofangrytown

The biggest reason I'd wait is you'd have to trade assets to land another goalie. A good veteran is going to be expensive in assets and have a big cap hit. A good youngster is going to cost you other assets. If I'm trying to "rebuild" or "retool" Why move assets to address a spot that is filled now?

Especially when you have a better UFA class in one year?

Doesn't the salary cap go down next year?

He's a UFA, there's no qualifiers for him. He signs a deal, he's a FA when it's over.

Yes. Then it will rise the next summer. The Flyers can buy out Briere and have around $10mm in space to add pieces and re-sign the few RFAs they will need to keep.

Buying out Bryz next summer gives you a TON of cap room and that is when you have to re-sign Giroux, Couturier, Read and Schenn, if they're all still around.

Honestly I can't see Couturier or Schenn breaking the bank. These guys haven't produced the numbers to warrant a big deal.

I think that both Hiller and Halak will be there. Halak might lose his job to Jake Allen. Miller is a bit of a wildcard, because I doubt he's a Sabre when his deal ends.

They won't, but Giroux will likely have a cap hit that starts with the number 8

from the game I saw, he is a bit slow in decisionmaking. Can't see him making the jump right away. Well, on second thought, maybe he'd fit right in.

Well, the way I look at the standings, Carolina is in 8th so if they win, then we are further from that spot. Believe me.. I'll be right back on the f you Rangers wagon next game.

I like Giroux and he had an MVP type season last year but that figure scares me.

I like Jake Allen but I'm not convinced he will be the long term solution. Holtby was awesome during the playoffs and has struggled this year in his first full time season.

Halak still has really good numbers this year.

Ditto. I'd love to see him start leading the team back into the playoff race. Could be a hard year for him learning the Captain's role.
