Unless they completely overpay, you are probably correct.
Would be great to draft a stud D man. I don't see that happening.
I admit, as much as I think of Couturier, I would rather have D. Hamilton right now. I think most Flyers fans would admit as much. - PLindbergh31
Double Hamilton looks great now but other rookies or young defensemen who looked as good and were discussed as future Norris contenders : Tyler Myers, Braydon Coburn. Lets wait and see how Hamilton and Couturier develop.

3 that were discussed here ad nauseum were OEL, bogo and pk. |

Yes. Both teams got very good players. I just look at the Flyers desperate need for a young top pairing guy. Hamilton could be that guy down the not so distant road. |

Teams can't trade money but they can pay for a portion of the traded player's salary. So we trade a player and then pay half his salary for so many years... In effect we are still paying them real money back. - FlyersGrace
It's not half, it's a portion. Still, if they're willing to pay $25M for 48 games, why wouldn't they be willing to pay less for future seasons will 82 games? People seem to think that Nashville has trouble with fan bases and finances. I can tell you that place draws a lot of fans, and with the new additions to the ownership group, financial concerns for the game's best defenseman and team captain are not an issue.

all they have to do is give out nascar paraphanelia at their games, the rest would take care of itself. - JoeRussomanno
This is the part that people fail to grasp. The money is locked in for cap purposes. And, you cannot make direct financial payments on the trade transaction. But every action has a financial offset value. For example players on entry level contracts would represent a financial value as well.
But, Wilson, the big dollar guy behind the Preds, lent them the cash to do the deal. It was big money for an NHL team, but loose change for the mega investor. As long as Wilson gets equal value on his investment there is no problem. The actual cost has already been absorbed in the Preds capital structure.
Last year I said the Preds would have no problem matching from a financial perspective. This summer it is exactly the same. They will have no financial problem in dealing Weber.

if the flyers do draft a dman in the top 10, they could do us a favor by not giving him more than an nhl look see for about 3 yrs. better to wait a little longer than was necessary than the opposite... |

My prediction. Flyers miss playoffs and get the 14th pick in the draft. |

I'm sure they could match just like I'm sure I can make the payments on a corvette. Is it healthy for me to do financially? With my life circumstances, no I need to pay the electric bill put food on the table etc. Just like them being a small market team in a market where drive fast turn left is way more important than hockey, dumping large dollars into one player didn't make sense to me. Now they are feeling it and looking for a way out. Just like I'd be if I did in fact bring home a corvette except I might be walking funny too after my wife gets done with me.

I agree the Flyers could use some young talent on defense, but I don't really see the desperate situation most other do. I watch this team and don't know of any one defenseman that would stop the steady stream of turnovers, odd-man rushes, and terrible back checking. They drafted four last year and if they do that again, I think there is a good chance that one or more could pan out. |

I know. If they are going to miss the playoffs, I want the highest pick. Something wacky will happen with the lottery. |

A lot of the defensive troubles are attributed to team defense, not just the defenseman. The forwards have to commit more in their own end. |

it's also the coach failing to realize his personnel don't match up to what he's trying to do. He doesn't have a full arsenal of mobile defensemen and if so this team would look better. Its give and take from the forwards, coach and dmen. Either way I'd like for them to improve the blueline. |

Well, if luck were more like karma, we'd be due for a 'barely miss the playoffs, but somehow end up with the first overall'. |

No, it does not work that way. Wilson put the money in the capital structure of the team. So, the payments to Weber are not really a part of the operational cost of the Preds. |

As I Leafs fan, I'm hoping the Flyers don't make the playoffs, as the Leafs are hanging on to a spot by their fingernails right now.
But if the Flyers do make it, can we please have a Pittsburgh-Philly 1st rounder?
Pretty please? - Atomic Wedgie
At this point, I'd be happy to just make the dance. I can't imagine the state of Leafs nation if they fall out of the playoffs again. All joking aside, if the Flyers were do go 9 years without a playoff game I would lose my mind. |

How is a salary not part of the operational cost of the Preds? It will most certainly count as part of the players share of HRR. And it will most definitely be on the books for Nashvill as operational costs. |

I'd like to see them add a good, solid young puck mover, but as things stand, with a full summer off and, more importantly a full training camp, they could start next season with a defense of Timonen, Schenn, Coburn, Meszaros and Grossmann. That's not an awful top 5.
I think that we could see them try to bring a guy like Ryan Whitney in here on a short term deal, for a reasonable cap hit, as a kind of Emery reclamation project. |

And how does an investor get an equal return on his investment? The Hockey team has to put people in the stands. |

yea I don't get that either are we trying to re-invent the wheel here? as far as I know player salary is a cost not a revenue or interest. If the team doesn't make the playoffs I don't see how this is a return on the investment. |

Speaking of Emery, how long of a contract is he currently on? If he's a UFA this summer, I would love to bring him on board to play with Bryz. It would haveto be more than a minimum contract, but I'd do two years at 1.5 mil a year to know we have a backup that can play more than 1 game which is a guranteed loss. Also, I can't see Homer not getting a puck moving dman in a trade. I was reading this morning that Wilson in SJ is in panic mode (rumour), and that a lot of players can be had. They started 7-0 and are now in 8th in the conference. Boyle would only be a short term fix and I am not sure what he has left in the tank. I wonder if Brent Burns would help at all? |
