But more bc I'd think players around the league see us as more of a "pretender" than a true "contender" for the cup
Why would Perry sign in Buffalo when there's prob 5+ other teams in the league that will throw big $$$ at him and have better records, bigger stars, "better" city, etc...

We won't be able to sign the top free agents that do become available until we start winning some playoff rounds again

Unless a team is willing to do that, Vanek has a chance at making more money with the Sabres than any other team. We can offer him that extra year to give him more money up front and still get a cap hit that we want.
