For all the benching he's getting top six minutes on this team.
He's been struggling all season. This isn't new, but in the last couple weeks there's also been a lack of effort and responsibility with the puck. You can't just keep running him out there when he's a liability.
Hell, Hartnell was benched for taking that stupid penalty and barely saw the ice until they were behind in the third. - mayorofangrytown
Yes, because he's still one of their best defensive players. But he's not going to develop into a good two way player unless they allow him to play more of a two way role. |

To take the side of Lavi in this, he has very little options to sit guys when he is trying to win games.
Jsaq mentioned Coburn leading the D in ice time even though he has been off his game.
What other options does Lavi have? Foster, Gusty, etc? Lavi would be killed if he benched Coburn for them.
I think on forward he has some slightly better options, but not really a whole lot.
There have been games where Briere played under 10 minutes. Not enough of them, to be sure, but some.
McGinn, Harry Z, Wellwood. And McGinn would likely still be here if he was healthy. - Marc D
The problem is that he allowed it to fester... |

On his 38th birthday and playing in his 1,000th career NHL regular season game, Kimmo Timonen logged 24:06 of ice time. He had two shots on goal, made several good pinches and played his usual sound two-way game. - bmeltzer
Except for an inexplicable chip of the puck to near the slot in the third period which caused a glorious scoring chance for the Lightning. I couldn't believe it was Timonen when it happened.
Similarly, I was stunned at the throwing of the puck to the middle (by whom, I forget) that led to the winning goal. Why not throw it up the boards for the safe play?
The fundamental failures of the Flyers are glaring - and they have no one to blame but themselves for their predicament. |

There's been 1 game where Briere played less than ten minutes. He's had seven games where he played more than 19 minutes.
Hartnell's played very poorly, but at the same time he's been seeing regular ice time as well. Last night, even though he was demoted, he still played over 13 minutes.
He doesn't have to scratch Coburn, but the guy's playing more minutes than anyone else. Increase the time that Schenn is playing, or Grossmann |

I think that play he flubbed the puck, he had a guy at the blue line, had he not flubbed it it wouldn't have been as bad. |

I don't think Lavi is without blame, I was just taking the Devil's advocate postion that he has very little in the way of players in the minors pushing the slacking players for ice time.
Every single good young player the Flyers have are already playing on the Flyers. |

So... he could have had it picked off a little higher in the zone?
Just frustrated watching the "steady" veterans looking as inept as the rookies. Meaning they all look like the cuts from the team Happy Gilmore failed to make. |

I'm hesitant to increase Grossmann's ice time too dramatically. He handles his 18-20 minutes a nigh great, but I worry if he's forced to play 20-24 a night we'll see some cracks |

All true but the pipeline is filled with puck moving defensemen and we need to resign Geno. If it comes down to him or Letang the choice is easy.
And Kunitz and Dupuis don't need to be Hossa or Neal, the chemistry those 3 have together is amazing. - canadianpenfan

Timonen is being paid like a top dman. Unfortunately he's being paid on past performance. |
