At least we can end the Corey Perry talk. BTW, that $8.625M cap hit could look real ugly in a few years if he starts to physically break down in his early 30s the way many power forwards do.

That lock out was an exceptioanlly productive event to allow the Owners and GMs a chance to regain control of player salary and revenue sharing .....Getzlaf and Perry are amongst the most talented in the game but their salaries should not be on par with Crosby's.....just goes to show you, these fools cant be saved. Granted, UFA puts teams in a different postion of bargaining power than RFA, and Montreal should be commended for keeping Suabbans salary in line commiserate with his tenure and production, but these contracts are ridiculous

I'm really starting to think the lockout was so both sides could take extended vacations.

They're back on the same pages as the "Couturier or Scheen plus our 1st for Yandle" trade scenarios. You'll recognize them because I threw up all over them.

Jake gardiner is locked away with the marlies. This kid is a puck moving d-man. He is 23.

I'd advise not to compare to Crosby's contract because he took a discount. If he hadn't he'd probably be making over $9.5 million per. I get your point though.

Leafs would probably want a nice return for him. I think they'll swap Holzer and Gardiner between the AHL and NHL before too long.

Also, he signed under a different CBA. No more 12 year deals to get the cap hit lower.

I'm confused how the Coyotes not scoring is related to their blueline depth, especially when one of those games was a 1-0 shootout loss.
- jmatchett

Not directly. But they are an organization that basically drafts defense, emphasizes defense. They have two very good young defensemen that are excellent chips for forward help in Gormley and Rundblad playing in the minors, and their losing games 1-0.

At this point, i'm a def no to schenn and couter in any gardiner trade. I would be willing to part with laughton.

I'd prefer moving Laughton in a trade like that...still have no idea why he's with the MArlies

the idea was brought up for the other organization to absorb some of the cap hit, which IMO makes it a little more enticing.
- JoeRussomanno

Still don't like it. The JvR deal was basically forced due to our blueline's depleted depth (regardless of Weber/Suter). I don't want another deal where we're dealing the player who led NHL rookies in goals last year, is able to play on any 4 lines as well as PK and PP duties, for a player who has been an underachiever for the past 4 years. I know that true #1 defensemen don't grow on trees, but I really don't think that moving Read for J-Bo is getting us any closer to a Cup. Keep Read, resign him when he hits FA, draft smartly to organizational needs, injure James Neal, win Cup.

It would have to be Laughton and a 1st + most likely. IMO, Laughton isn't as good of a prospect as people seem to think.

The Crosby to Getzlaf/Perry contracts aren't comparable. The Pens were able to longtail the deal to lessen the cap hit. Look at the salary breakdown over the next 8 seasons:

The cap hits are close, but not the dollars paid out. With the new CBA, stars will be getting higher cap hits than we've been used to with the previous CBA.

Being with the marlies, they cannot be too high on him right now. A Laughton could get it done. Toronto seem pretty happy with their current d corps.

read was a 26 year old rookie who outscored guys 5-6 years younger. Also he's probably not going to be a frugal investment next go around on the contract. Defensemen are a higher value than forwards. Read is a good guy that can play on any line but that's about it. FLyers need mobile defensemen, they have the knack for acquiring forwards.

Gunnarsson, Franson, Fraser will be RFAs this year and Kostka will be a UFA. I think if they want to move Gardiner, they could easily get more than Laughton. That's a big IF too. He's still a good young defenseman and I'm sure Komisarek, Holzer or the other guys I listed would be moved before him.

If he asked to be traded, then things change a bit.
