I'm not implying that at all. What I'm saying is that we know that they won a Cup with Staal but we are merely speculating that they'd win one with Toews. There chances would be greater but it's still speculation nonetheless. - NickTheKid87
Ok, fair enough. |

one last thing on Couts.. out of all of our forwards, only Talbot has had a higher % of d-zone starts... at .3% more.. 64% of both of their starts have been in the d-zone.
Couts top 5 opponents per ice time this season have been (in order from most time spent against) Letang-Nash-Gaborik-Niskanen-Malkin
Nobody else comes even close... |

20 gp 920% almost on par with Malcolm subban - Philly1980
Yeah, not too shabby. I just hope there is no rushing and they just let him develop. |

Overlooked is the fact Shero was put into place 1 month before the June draft which he took Staal over Toews. Usually when you come to a new organization it takes a while to get your guys in place. Greg Malone was still head of scouting for the Pens and I'm sure he had a fair amount of input (probably more towards the back end of the draft, but point remains). Staal was thought to be a safer pick.
Also if the Pens drafted Toews, they likely would have had to trade him earlier than they did Staal. Lot of hypotheticals. |

Very true. No way they would be able to afford to pay all 3, yet still ice a complete and competitive team. |

Good then they won't be able to pay all 3 now. Meaning Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. |

I hope so. Time will tell. Zero reason to keep him at this point. - PLindbergh31
Some GM will be desperate enough to offer something-a pick or prospect, depends if Briere would waive. |

The Flyers viewed him as another Adam Henrique. His numbers are actually better than Henriques were. Maata was viewed as a run of the mill defensive defensemen by some scouts (THN). Maybe that is how the Flyers viewed him and thought they could get a dmen of his quality later in the draft. - psuhockey
Henrique was the latest flavor of the month to slay the Flyers so we are drafting to combat Adam Henrique |

You would hope a GM would look past his current level of play and see the playoff pedigree. If Kubina could net a #2 and #4 Briere must be worth at least that. |

I think drafting Staal over Toews was partially done because they knew they already had two stud center man up the middle in Crosby and Malkin so adding another potential #1 center would handcuff them in the future. Besides, Staal helped them win a Cup so that was a great choice, IMO. - NickTheKid87
So they drafted Staal bc Toews was just too good?? Haha cmon |

It happens just about every year, you see a guy move and are baffled by how much he was worth.
Briere's point per game scoring in the playoffs will be attractive to somebody. But he's going to be able to dictate the team and might not fetch a lot. Still, getting any return for a guy I'd be buying out in three months anyhow is fine with me.

Nope. Rather than taking the best player available, they drafted for team needs. |

Only contending teams would be interested. Have to think Briere would be willing to wave to have a chance at a Cup. |

So the team need was to take the defensive minded center, opposed to the equally good defensive center, with more skill? Interesting strategy. |

I would be fine with recouping the pick that was traded for Gagne. |
