As a Pens fan like I say everyday I hate everything that has to do with the Flyers, but I want the Flyers in the playoffs. As a matter of fact i want to play them in the playoffs, their is nothing like it. What do you guys feel your team is missing to get over the playoff hump, coaching? It would be infuriating to me to have the team you guys have and have them not win. - nbartley9
Oh were taking a page out of pittsburgh's book this year and just tanking for the number one pick. |

We may agree that they're "cooked", but I highly doubt management and the coaches are going to treat it that way yet. And I'd prefer them not to. - bradleyc4
I prefer they don't either. His will ensure they just keep losing and ensure a higher pick. It is so important to be in the top 5 or 3 maybe!! |

An Aerosmith reference for the title and a (semi) Smiths reference as a first line. Nice work, and the latter has a lyric that's really apropos -
Nothing's changed
I still love you, oh, I still love you
...Only slightly, only slightly less than I used to, my love

Thats nuts because I always had the impression that Hartnell was a great locker room guy. - nbartley9
He got hurt and has struggled to find his game since returning. I also doubt he's 100%.
But also guys like Briere, Timonen, Coburn-they've all been below par |

Any personnel moves (except a coaching change) made to try to salvage a playoff spot would be a colossal mistake. This team is quite simply not good enough to make the playoffs this season and there is no move out there that would change that. With the notable exception of 06-07, the Flyers very rarely have been sellers (even if they should be). This is the time to change that. They need to move all assets that are not in their future plans. The focus should be on defensemen: NHL players, NHL-ready players, or prospects. They have very few, if any D prospects with top-4 potential much less top pairing potential. That needs to change. A defensive rebuild for next season will not be easily accomplished and will require trading some of this forward depth they have accumulated. Im not sure that free-agancy is going to help them either. Teams are generally not letting top Dmen reach free agency, notwithstanding Suter.
We all know the Flyers have always loved big forwards and Couturier may have been just too good to lay off but a Dougie Hamilton would look pretty good on the Flyers right now given the state of the blueline. I am also vexed by the selection of Laughton (who certainly looks like a good prospect) in a defense-heavy draft with 2-3 good D prospects still on the board.
Homer has made many nice moves since becoming GM but one area where he has failed miserably is drafting/developing defense propects. That needs to change whether at the hands of Homer or his replacement. |

1st off, time to fire Lavy, at this point they'd be doing the poor guy a favor, he looked like an inmate on death row last night!
Give the job to Terry Murray on an interim basis and make the final decision on a new coach at the end of the season. At least Murray will start getting these guys to play positionally sound hockey, and if they don't he WILL bench them.
Regarding the lines, and barring any trades, I would go with the following next game:
1. Talbot-Giroux-Voracek
Talbot earned it last night, and Hartnell has just been awful
2. Gagne-Schenn-Simmonds
Schenn and Simmonds will benefit playing with a smart vet like Gagne
3. Hartnell-Couturier-Read
Read and Couturier have had good chemistry in the past, and maybe this
wakes Hartnell up.
4. Fedotenko-Wellwood-Rinaldo
YOu can replace Wellwood on this line when Harry Z's suspension ends and once they inevitably trade Fedotenko, you can pop McGinn into his spot.
You may have noticed some guy named Briere missing from this lineup. It's time for Holmgren to sit him down and give him 2 options. A. Give me a list of 10-12 teams you would be willing to be traded to, and we will try our best to move you to a contender of your choice or B. enjoy the press box and you'll get your buyout check in June. As lousy as Briere has played, his track record in the playoffs will still probably get some GM to give up a 2nd for him, so lets get it done.
Now onto the D.
Coburn is a mess right now. However there are playoff teams out there such as Detroit that are all but desperate for a defenseman or 2. I'd package Coburn with our 3rd round pick and try to get a 1st from a contender for him.
If they can do that I'd finish the season with the following pairs
Timonen-Schenn
Grossman-Mezaros
Gus-Lilja or Foster.
I left out Gervais, because as much as he sucks, a playoff team looking for depth would probably move a 6th or 7th round pick for him.
Goal
I give a Bryz a pass for this season, no goalie would look good playing behind this mess and his workload has been ridiculous. That being said, he needs to step it up next year or he will absolutely be a buyout candidate and for the love of god Homer, get a decent backup!
Rant over - BiggE
Just one thing, Talbot is not a top line guy. Move Hartnell but Max has a role to play even if that isn't what he's been doing this year.

I think it is a true combination of a coach utilizing high risk/high reward system (see that as total lack of team defense), our vets underachieving, and our young guys going through some growing pains. |

I hadn't heard that Del Zotto was available. But I did want the Flyers to offer sheet Subban and at least make Montreal pay extra for him. He has the potential to be much better than any of the other guys you mentioned. |

Flyers have the potential to be leapfrogged by 4 teams in the overall standings by the time they play their next game on Sunday. The Flames play 2 games and are 1 point behind the Flyers, the Caps play 3 games and are 2 points back, Buffalo plays 3 games and is 3 points back and Colorado plays 2 games and are 3 points back. Calgary has 3 games in hand, Washington & Colorado 2 and Buffalo 1.
The Flyers could find themselves in 29th place at worst and they could remain at 25th at best. |
