They are off today, correct? If so they should probably spend it at home sitting on the couch watching Maury.

Maybe a good Law & Order marathon is on. They could order out from King of Pizza and drink chocolate milk.

Doesn't that sound magical?

Who knows? Maybe some time out is what they need.

I can't get worked up over young athletes out having a good time.

As that fine GM, Joe McGrath, so eloquently put it: "Better they're playing with their toys than playing with themselves!!"

Rather see them loosening up and having some fun, than sitting home and feeling sorry for themselves.

No time to chat, but I've only endorsed the trading of couturier or bschenn in strafe ONLY for a trade to replace pronger and kimo PERIOD. It's my personal belief that the problems this year are due to the system being taught, mainly. Players have a share in the blame too but you can't fire the team as easily as you can fire the coach. This organization is too finicky with what it wants to do and what players it wants to build around.

Not sure how to respond other than, "I know that."

They have to limit the goals against, for sure, but they sure as heck aren't doing much offensively.

- Flyskippy

Maybe it's obvious but all the talk on the thread is about defense. Their goals per game is down nearly a half goal. They haven't exactly been getting blown out in games. If you turn around 6 games this is a different season.

Exactly. Moping around now isn't going to help.

Better defense leads to more offense. Also, when you have trouble getting out of your own end, you're burning a ton of energy that could be used in the offensive end.

Few Thoughts:

-The Flyers are very, very impatient. They have spent a lot of time chasing last year's Stanley Cup. It's a curse and a blessing. Rather than rehash past deals, it's best to look ahead and see how they can fix the situation they are in....which actually isn't that dire.

-The Flyers have a lot of good young talent that is learning to play at the NHL level. They will get better. This is not just limited to Schenn and Couturier. Guys like Simmonds and Voracek are still learning and getting better.

-I have stated often that I would actively shop Danny Briere, Simon Gagne and Ruslan Fedotenko and listen to offers for Scott Hartnell, Max Talbot, Bryadon Coburn and Andrej Mesazaros. It would take a lot for me to move Hartnell and Coburn. Despite his short comings, it would be really difficult to replace Coburn at a reasonable price.

-As for compliance buyouts, I wouldn't use one on Bryzgalov this summer. Perhaps the summer of 2014. I really want a new coach, and want to see how Bryzgalov plays behind a team that isn't an overaggressive undisciplined mess. That's not to say he's blame free.

-Scott Laughton doesn't replace Couturier. Ultimately, I think that Bryaden Schenn moves to a wing, Couturier is the 2nd line center and Laughton is the 3rd line center.

- Jsaquella

In my mind I was thinking the return for Hartnell could be huge.
It would have to be to do it.

A young defenseman + a good goalie, like Tanev and C Schneider from Vancouver,
or Bishop + Weircoch + pick from Ottawa? Maybe these are bad examples but just thinking out of the usual box.

I guess the more realistic question is will they try to trade and being able to get something back for Briere.

Do you think Homer would consider picking up Komisarek just to have options at the trade deadline? He has another year left at 4.5M, is 6'4" and 230 pounds. Don't shoot me!

If Briere is willing to waive, I think he can get them a decent pick/prospect package.

I also think that Briere'd be more willing to waive if he got a promise from the new team that they'd buy him out in June.
Like a 2nd rounder and mid-lvel prospect or maybe a 2nd & 4th

Agreed, it would have to be. Especially with divisional play; that guy is a key cog to us having success against Pittsburgh.

Why would Briere want a guarantee to be bought out? Just so he could move back "home"?

If he's claimed off wavers, he'd have to offered to every team that put in a claim on him during the original waiver process to be traded.

What happens on waivers is, teams submit a claim on a player and the lowest ranked team gets him. If that team wishes to trade the player, all the other teams that had a claim in get to acquire the player at the waivers cost.

Although obviously having Komisarek would allow them to free up other defensemen for trades

Sorry for the long explanation.

Well, I think Voracek is becoming a thorn in Pitt's side as well as Giroux and Couts.

But Hartnell for sure brings an attitude that is hard to replace.

Bettman: welcome to the 2013 general managers meeting, we have 7 hours to discuss league issues... Homer: Gary excuse me, please sit down and shut up I have something more important going on right now. My fellow gm's, my team blows and I'm sitting at table 16 and I'm open for business. All players available, make me an offer I can't refuse!

He'd still get most of the $5mm remaining on his existing deal and could negotiate a new contract and double down. The main reason is, he'd be able to pick and choose where he'd want to play. Maybe he gets dealt to the Blues, but wants to stay in the Northeast. He goes, plays for the Blues for 20 games and then can return to the NE in the summer.

Sorry, I meant it would give Homer options if they did indeed want to trade Coburn/Mez for pick or young dman assuming they claimed Komisarek.
