That was not my question. - Jimmygrazz
Well if you wanted Carle and his 5.5 million dollar cap hit, you are probably in the minority. |

It's as if Niewendyk floated this rumor himself to create a market for Jagr. - johndewar
There should be a market anyway. He's still a good player. It's not like he's only a name. The Flyers' may have kicked the tires at some point too. |

Would this team be in a better position right now if they just re-signed Jagr and Carle instead of going after Weber, Suter and Parise? - Jimmygrazz
I don't know if they needed to keep Jagr but Keeping Carle would've prevented the need for the JVR trade. I'd say they'd be better with Carle+JVR than LSchenn taking nothing away from Schenn. Would they be a Cup contender? I don't think so. |

Sell, Sell, Sell!
Trading assets for rentals would be criminal, and standing pat and not trading pieces for some picks/young players would be dumb.
This is simple, yet I don't have much faith in Holmgren doing the logical thing. I hope I'm wrong. - PLindbergh31
I'm with you in hoping that Homer knows to cut his losses with respect to the current season and start taking steps toward a general retooling...
Some of his best moves as Flyers' GM came as a TDL seller back in 07:
- Coburn for Zhitnik,
- 2 former 1st-round picks (Upshall, Parent) plus a 1st-rounder for Forsberg,
- Turning Kyle Freakin' Calder into multiple assets (Kukkonen + 3rd)
The man definitely knows how to leverage other GMs' desperation to juice a good return. |

I am pretty sure they could have resigned him last season for a more reasonable cap hit, but Holmgren had this plan and decided to wait and see. Would you have taken him at 4.7?

Thank you for this, Bill. Too many people still think that bringing Jagr back would save the Flyers from Oblivion and salvage the season. - NickTheKid87
Season's done. There just isn't enough left to turn around.
That being said I don't think we should sell off everyone. We could drop a few guys for picks or Prospects. But this team is not as bad as their record indicates. This many games into a regular season we'd still have a shot at turning this around. I don't feel that we aren't capable... we just hit an unfortunate early Cold streak that is going to have us run out of season before we get things moving in the right direction. |

Enough to know Carle is a horror show. What has he done to improve their team? - PLindbergh31
Quantify what is enough? How does a player lead his team in icetime if he's a horror show? When he was here and he was very good, you thought he stunk. TB has played 30 games. How many TB games have you watched? I have no idea how good or bad he's been. I've seen a coulple of TB games. It does not appear that he is having a very good statitistical year. So tell me how Carle is singularly to blame for TB issues? |

Carle + JvR = $10M against the cap. How was that going to work? |

I would much rather see Jagr, G, and Voracek on that top line right now then Hartnell. I don't have an issue with the JVR trade at all.

Carle has been awful in TB this year, and they totally overpaid for him. I bet Yzerman would like a do over with that contract. - PLindbergh31
Carle has not had a good season, but I highly doubt Yzerman wants a "do-over." Careers aren't made or lost by looking at a 30 game sample. |

Agree, his best moves are as a Seller but he's had his fair share of desperation moves too. |

I fear it could be Snider driven if they were to bring in rentals to try and salvage a season that is already gone. |

I'm not arguing he has played good or bad. I simply asking how many TB games you've watched to come to any conclusion of how he has played? My guess would be very few. |

Here's the thing with that theory: the Flyers usually always sure up guys mid season (i.e. Grossmann, Coburn, Carter, JVR, etc.) before they hit UFA or RFA status which leads me to believe that something more was going on with Carle. Maybe Snider thought he was too soft or Carle's agent told Matt to wait until free agency to get a bigger contract. It doesn't make sense that they wouldn't sign him mid-sign when they had the tagging space if both sides were in agreement for a "home town discount".
Maybe the organization just decided to go with Grossmann and figured Carle would re-sign for a discount closer to July 1st or they had a "gentleman's agreement". Carle wanted to stay, that much we know. I'm glad we didn't give him what Tampa did though. |

My point is I think Carle would be playing better if he were still on this team. I have no way of proving it obviously, but it is hard to change teams/systems.

Everyone needs to step back and realize the best thing for this organization to do is keep rebuilding. they need to trade as many vets or whoever is not contributing to the team and stockpile the talent and draft picks for this team this summer which is a very deep draft.
Flyers are one of the worst teams in the NHL (healthy) and our AHL team argueably is the worst. that is not a very comforting feeling. Our farm system really does not have alot there , maybe some bottom 6-12 forward spots or 6-7 defenseman.
The outlook for the future right now is bleak...We need to be patient and keep building and not let the PANIC button set in... |
