Most guys drafted after 5 will take a year or two to become good NHLers.
That's the norm. But there's still a deep pool of talent that should still be regular NHLers, that is what is meant by a deep draft. Deep draft doesn't mean it's chock full of ready made superstar level players.
Hell, it wouldn't hurt the prospective top pick to stay a year in junior. - Jsaquella
so no one is going right into the hall of fame directly from the draft hall? Damn! |

I think the whole "deep" draft is being overplayed. When these guys like media type say its a deep draft it means picks 1 through 10 are petty solid when in years after say 5 there was big drop off. There isnt going to be a kid drafted at 15 that turns into a superstar at least not immediately. - flyerfan28
For what it's worth, in the same time frame we've heard this draft touted as deep, I heard the last two described as the opposite. I've never been one to keep my thumb on the pulse when it comes to the juniors and the draft, so take it with a grain of salt. |

Quincey was had for a 1st and a prospect at the deadline last year. The lack of sellers will make up for the "deep" draft at the deadline. Coburn is def worth that. |

Much better to move any vets you can, shut down Timonen for the rest of the season and let his foot heel, and get a top 5 pick. Do whatever you need to do to move that pick up, so you can draft Seth Jones.
You now have a pretty sweet core of players all 25 or younger consisting of Jones, Giroux, both Schenns, Couturier, Voracek and Simmonds. With a group like that the Flyers should be serious contenders soon. - BiggE
I'd try to trade the veteran UFA's and Briere. I'd be open to moving guys like Hartnell, Talbot, Coburn and Meszaros. But I wouldn't dump them willy nilly, because this team will be a pretty solid one in a year or two and having those guys will help the transition. |

It would be a big mistake to trade Coburn for that.

I think they can get a nice ransom for him. I would keep Mez. |

1st rounder + - Just5
Okay, now they've got that first rounder plus. Are they drafting a defenseman with that pick that can play 20 plus minutes? |

Bill, again I agree with you 100%. However, the scary thing is I felt like this was kinda of an "duh" concept. - nonpoint22
I agree. But considering a beat writer wrote yesterday about why the Flyers should pursue Jagr as a rental, I felt the topic should be addressed. |

so any trade that isn't an immediate upgrade to the current roster is bad? |

No. But trading a top defenseman for a draft pick, when you already have a need for a defenseman, is. What is the plan to replace Coburn?

i'd think that the philosophy behind trading him wouldn't require an immediate replacement. if they are trading him, it's because they are more focused on the future (beyond the next couple of years)
and what do you mean by top defenseman? top 30 in the league? top 50? or just a top 4 guy? |

By top defenseman I mean a defenseman who plays 20 plus minutes a game. Obviously, if you trade him for a draft pick, it's about the future. But an immediate replacement is a requirement. If not by return of the trade of Coburn itself. Then by some other means.
Unless is a very high first round pick, which I doubt you'd get for Coburn. Trading him for a lower first round pick is a mistake in my opinion.
I would not be opposed to a deal involving Coburn that brought back NHL ready players, or another defenseman that they felt was a better fit. |

Couturier was the top rated prospect heading into his draft year. He had a summer bout with mono and had a slow start, and RNH surpassed him. Kind of funny both are dealing with sophomore slumps |
