I agree. my thoughts were assuming that we are in seller's mode this season and lose Briere and others. Possibly a new coach next season.
- mikel33

They should sell. Briere's a bad fit now, as Schenn and Couturier have bumped him to a wing, where he's not as effective. The others they should sell, like Gagne or Fedotenko can be re-signed as they are UFAs.

I wouldn't advocate a full blown fire sale of every veteran.

G is averaging almost a point per game. Pretty good for 3.75 mill. Wayne Simmonds has 20 points. Again, not bad for 1.75 mill.
- Jimmygrazz

Agreed.

Still, I think G has struggled a bit this season. It happens. And I like what Simmonds brings - especially for the salary, as you noted - and I think he'll be solid for years, I just need him to step up his D game so I stop yelling at my TV every time him, Briere and Schenn are on the ice. (Same goes for Schenn as well, but he's just struggling across the board this season...but has a lot of potential)

You see an asterisk next to the Devils' Cup in '95?

Bottom line is, all teams played the same regular season and the playoffs are unchanged. Winning the Cup isn't any easier or harder. It's all relative.

- NickTheKid87

NOBODY TOLD ME THERE'D BE A PUNCTUATION TEST TODAY!!!

I would still party my ass off on Broad Street if we won a Cup in lock out shortened season.

Well, if Couturier is still living in Casa de Briere, they'll have plenty to talk about when they get home from practice.

That can be done. You don't need guys who are the cost and caliber of Meszaros, you need guys who aren't going to hurt you.
- Jsaquella

well, they can always re-sign Lilja, Foster and Gervais!

Their missing the 1996 playoffs bolstered the asterisk talk, but boy how that died by 2000.

It is funny how the group is strongly split on Coburn and Mez and the guy who was supposed to be controversial (Schenn) is flying under the radar.

This is a sound statement.

If they go all-young, they'd be setting themselves back even further. Of course, if that's what management feels the team needs (a full retooling of this rebuild started in the summer of 2011), then go for it. With Mr. Snider around, I highly doubt that would be the case though.

Sure there is a debate. The "asterisk" is ficticious. The All Star game couldn't be more irrellevant. Winnin the Cup is winning the Cup.
- MJL

Unless you aren't aware of what an asterisk symbolizes, there is no debate.

I never said winning the cup wasn't winning the cup.

If a guy is signed next season and not creating a somewhat sticky roster situation, then no need to be actively trying to move him. Sure, I'd listen to offers for guys like Talbot and Coburn, but I'd need a significant return.

There's no reason not to get some return from the UFAs, though

Here's a question to anyone who says bad player performances (Coburn, Giroux, Hartnell, etc.) are just the result of a bad short season and not a long-term regression:

Does it mean that players like Voracek and Schenn aren't necessarily progressing, that they've just had a good short season? Or does it only go the 1 way? I've seen people on here praising how much Voracek and (until recently) Schenn were progressing, but any bad talk of Coburn is met with, "He's fine, he's just had a bad year."

Winning the Cup any year is mutually exclusive from every other year played in the NHL. It's not the same with statistics like goals or points.

Take Roger Maris for example. He hit 61 home runs to break Ruth's record. He got an asterisk because he had more games to accomplish the feat. That makes sense but when you're talking about the Cup, the previous years have nothing to do with the current season.

48 games, 82 games, it doesn't matter. You are not competing with anything outside of the current season that would warrant an asterisk. It doesn't make it any easier or harder to win a Cup just because you played less games. They haven't always played 82 games btw.

Meh. I'll believe it when I see it. As Homer and Lava did not seem to be on the same page before the season started (talk of Lava needing to change his system and Lava denying that), this would mean that Lava is a part of management's push to get Briere to accept a trade. Not sure that's the case.
