The Flyers biggest issue with AHL depth is the lack of draft picks. Trading Sbisa, plus two first rounders hurts the depth. Trading picks for Grossmann hurts the depth. They do rush first rounders at times, but they also haven't had first rounders in two of the last 4 years. - Jsaquella
exactly the point im trying to make...they dont value draft picks as much as other teams do...now there in this mess of where they have to overpay to get a defenseman or tank for a while.... |

i totally disagree with that....
a lot of teams let their players spend time in minors before joining the big club...flyers are guilt of that because they have left themselves with no depth - Philly1980
Can you name 3 players who you would rate higher than Couts that are currently hanging out in the AHL or Jrs? |

Sbisa was rushed. You could make the argument Bobrovsky was, as well. - Jsaquella
I don't think Bobrovsky was rushed, as much as he was mishandled by Lavy. |
|
|
|
Who have they really "rushed" in recent years? If I'm not mistaken, Couturier was known to be one of the more NHL ready players in that draft, and certainly wasn't out of place last year. Schenn already played in the AHL with the Kings no? They let guys like Kevin Marshall, Bartulis, MAB stew in juniors and in the AHL for a while. And brilliant picks like 3rd rounder Garrett Klotz. - eayost
schenn played in the ahl/juniors his first couple of years....he wasnt automatically rushed to the nhl...he was for a while the top prospect not in the nhl. |

Coots was the hands down First overall until he got Mono and slipped down the charts. If he had been drafted by the Oilers he would be in the LU from opening night as well. |

Schenn played a total of 14 AHL games over 2 seasons before playing in the NHL full time. One of the seasons he joined after he jr season ended.. the other he was sent there at the start of the season to void his bonus and originally bec of numbers. |

Since 2007 the only big names who have come out of the 2nd round are PK Subban, Justin Faulk, Voynov, Roman Josi, and Travis Hamonic.
They are 2% of the entire 2nd round picks from 07-12.
Furthermore.. D-men the Flyers passed up on to take the best available.. since 05.
I will not look at players outside of the first round.
05- Vladimir Mihalik
06- Dennis Persson, Ivan Vishnevskiy, Chris Summers, Matt Corrente
07- Hickey, Alzner, McDonagh, Shattenkirk, Ian Cole, Blum, Brendan Smith, Petrecki, Ross
08-MDZ, Cuma, Carlson
09- would have picked 26th, Olsen and Despres were the only two d-men pick after that.
10- would have picked 29th no d picked after that
11-Hamilton, Murphy and Oleksiak are the only 3 to have played in the NHL so far. - jak521
HIndsight is always 20/20. I'm pretty sure the Flyers regret taking Ron Sutter with the 4th pick in 82, when Scott Stevens was still on the board. However the clubs that drafted Nylund and Kluzak before Stevens probably feel even worse.
I'm also pretty sure that San Jose really regrets taking Falloon with the 2nd pick in 91 when Forsberg was on the board, likewise I'm guessin both the Flyers and Canucks would happily go back in time to 1990 and exchange Mike Ricci or Petr Nedved for Jaromir Jagr |

Exactly. There is no exact science, how ever.. looking back.. I even went further.. taking the best available has been a very wise decision for the them over the years. There were only a handful of other first rounders, chosen after the flyers choice that were better players. |

Absolutely agree with the second comment. I have stated in the past that I would like for the Flyers to start drafting heavy D in the 2nd 3rd and 4th rounds. Draft best available in the 1st.
I absolutely define youth as having players in the system... If you draft very well.. so well in fact that your players make very quick jumps to the NHL (not saying this is the Flyers case), you have a lot of youth.. just not too many "prospects" (by definition standard). The Flyers have one of the youngest cores in the NHL. They can easily continue to build while remaining young. - jak521
good to find common ground, but i don't see the flyers building where they need it on D now that a) quality FAs are locked up and b) the flyers prospect pool is too thin. clearly, they have to subtract from their youthful roster core and they aren't exactly lighting up the scoreboard. also, i don't want to trade another #1 pick. should be an interesting off season. |

Missed the Jrs part...
Even still... he had every shot at making it to the NHL.. he just didnt make the cut. Played his first NHL game the year he was drafted and then was sent back. Got his second shot his second year and still wasnt good enough to play in the NHL so again he was sent back. |

Doug hamilton spent last year in the Minors
Jonathan Huberdeau spent time in the minors
Mika Zibanejad spent time in the minors
all three are better and have spent their first year in the minors. |

This is where I think people tend to get stuck. Not many teams have a guy in their back pocket thats gonna net you a top end d-man. What we do have is an abundance of younger very promising forwards. You can use Schenn or Couts or Voracek or etc. and get a deal done. |

Yes, blame the coach for mishandling Bobrovsky. His options were a 22 year old kid, and a couple of journeymen retreads in Boucher and Leighton. What other coach entered the playoffs that season with those kind of options? If there was a legit goaltender here, Bobrovsky could have been developed at a proper pace. |

How did they screw up the over 35 on that?....it was a freak injury, much like the lappy injury. You can't envision injuries like that happening and forcing yourself the handle it for the rest of the deal. Teams sign players to over 35 contracts because they EXPECT them to play until it is over, not retire midway through.
That is why there was such a huge amount of talk about making career ending injuries void the over 35 rule. - Pyzik
it's pretty clear the flyers thought they could sign pronger to an under 35 deal...remember the hullabaloo about hanrahan... |

Ill wait to see how all three play in their second years before stating they are better. Would you have taken any of the three over Couts this time last season... absolutely not. Hell, we were head over heels in love with the "steal of the draft" |

You can't really ease a goalie into the playoffs. You ride him out. Look at Fleury. He went 1-4 in his first playoff run. His second year he went 14-6.
