Name a free agent defenseman that the flyers can get. - Philly1980
This is the list I would look at:
Robyn Regehr
Ryan Whitney
Ladislav Smid
Rob Scuderi
Marek Zidlicky
Lubomir Visnovsky
Mark Streit |

Well karlsson is such a hulking figure he needed all the leverage he can get. I'm sure it's all just a big misunderstanding - Just5
Karlsson is one of the strongest players on the puck in the entire NHL. A lot like Crosby in the way he keeps his body so low and square. Dont need to be big to be strong. Ask 5'10 (at best) 175 (at best) Rinaldo. |

A seth jones type would be better and cheaper...im all up for doing it through the draft...tough to find impact defenseman who arent over the hill and who dont want the stars and the moon to come here. |

Well, I've never done it at all ever, so it's a tied vote.
Ignore the fact I've been playing for under a year - BulliesPhan87
Being a Flyers fan I hate you, but let me just say the Boba Fett is amazing. |

Theres the answer right there.
EDIT: The only thing I have a problem with is how high he brought his leg.. his knee was at the level of Karlssons lower back. It should never be that high. - jak521
Exactly. You don't see that all the time in a game. |

Anyone else notice that in any Pitts game, they always seem to get those penalty calls when the clock is short and they need goals. I am not saying that the penalties weren't deserved but there were MUCH worse offenses out there last night that went uncalled, to have 2 calls right after one other to put up a convienient Pens 5-3. I am not just talking about the Flyers I have seen it in games against other clubs as well. - Pyzik
the pens seem to end up with 5 on 3 advantages every time they play, often when it can benefit them the most late in the game.
either way, the flyers, while playing better overall still had long stretches of being hemmed in their own end due to poor execution more than anything else, and it was a miracle the pens didn't score until their 2 man advantage. they just have no answer for protecting leads in the latter half of games. more squandered points when they were ahead.

You could get Pietrangelo right now and it would likely have little significant impact. They need to revise the way they play defense as a team.
With that being said, I would look to Phx and try to get Runblad.. and St Louis and see if there is a trade that would work with them.. They have about 15 guys who need to be resigned, including their top scorer (who is having a career year), Shattenkirk and AP |

That I will agree with. His knee was way to high.. I just attributed that to the body contact. Could be wrong though.. |

I wouldn't take any of them particularly when you consider their cost.
Pitt and Sens are doing it right with young players competing from a large pool of their own talent around a core base.
We have the base - trade like Dallas did for a young Morrow.

Agreed....i just dont think you can build your defense through free agency...that was my disagreement with the poster...
In this case the flyers are among the top in the league in terms of how much their defense costs...its mediocre at best. |

Just watching the way they both made body contact, his leg raising after that, and then hitting the boards... i cant imagine a guy being able in literally 1 seconds being able to do all of that and then step on a guy (with out looking at where he was stepping) on purpose. If it was a different person I dont even think its talked about. If it were Coburn or Timonen people wouldnt bat an eye. Players lift their legs and trap every game. - jak521
I've seen it, I still think it could have been either malicious or unfortunate. That's really where it ends for me, until I finally realize the power to divine the truth from his brain (I am working on this). I don't even feel strongly enough to say none is more likely than the other. To me, there's only one important factor: Karlsson, who was playing towards not just a Norris but a Hart, will not play for a good long time, and it's unfortunate.
The Cooke name does play a bit of a role, I'll openly admit. |

Jones will not be NHL ready next season. You draft for the future, but get free agents for the now. I just looked at Philly's cap numbers for defense and they have 21.6 mil for 5 guys!! Need to trade some of that to free up room. Can't be paying guys in a 5/6 role 3 to 4 million. |

so who are you going to trade?
Coburn,
Mez,
Schenn,
Timmo,
Nik,
you are delusional if you think you are going to get comparable guys cheaper... the only way you do that is through the draft...
Jones will not be ready and needs a year in juniors an one in the ahl i agree...
unfortunately you cant overhaul your defense in one year. that is what im disagreeing with you on...its going to take 2/3. im ok with that as long as its done right.

This is the list I would look at:
Robyn Regehr - Worse version of Smid
Ryan Whitney - scratched by the defensive juggernaut that is the Oilers
Ladislav Smid - We have Grossmann and Schenn
Rob Scuderi - at a fair cap hit, can't pass up a 2-time Cup winner. Over $3M though would be tough.
Marek Zidlicky - nice as a #5/6.
Lubomir Visnovsky - production has dropped significantly in recent years. Will get a massive overpayment.
Mark Streit - see Visnovsky - kschmitty33
Basically, if they can get Scuderi for under $3M or Zidlicky pretty cheap ($2M or so) I'm okay with it. Otherwise, nothing too appealing. Neither player will single-handedly put them over the top. However, using them as additions to our team with the right system in place and they are a definite upgrade over Gervais/Foster/et. al. |

I'm thinking MAYBE Foster gets moved to a team looking for a PP point man with a bomb. That's basically his one trick. Would be lucky to get a 6th/7th for him though. Only one of the 3 that I can see moving. |

Last few years, Zidlicky is $4million, Scuderi is $3.4 million |

In an honest question, from the mind of a Flyers fan (a place that has to be scary to explore). Do you guys as a fan base have hope for the playoffs? Because the way you guys played last night you are better than the Rags, Jets,Leafs, and Caps. Being only a few points out, I would really love a chance to get revenge for last years playoff crapping of the bed. |

You maybe right that you cant get comparable guys. But really are these guys helping you win games or making your defense any better? That's were you need to rebuild the defense. You pick two guys that just don't fit the system and get rid of them, use lesser paid and younger players as 5/6's. |

i don't.
they have talent, but have played poorly as a group for much of the season due to a variety of reasons. with a few tweaks and perhaps a coaching change they should be right back to being in the mix next year.
very disappointing season.
forget the revenge. the pens are a very good team with a chance to win another cup this season. |

I think the reason they played well last night was because they had six days off to practice....
I dont have any hope for the playoffs because at this point they are in too much of a hole... |
