Also a lot of times the puck is dug out and given to one of grossman, schenn, or coburn and the offense stalls. Let's switch the d mix up - Just5
For the most part defensively I think the D-men do their job. A shake-up is in order, and better depth on that 3rd pairing is crucial.
When talking about winning puck battles and being hard to play against along the boards I was talking about the forwards. The Flyers play pretty damn soft up front imo. Too fancy first and foremost. |

If the forwards were more mindful of the gap issues, and gave the defense more options or at least, more high percentage options, it would cut down on a lot of the neutral zone turnovers, and also, I've seen that quite often the defenseman will have to skate to the red line, and all 3 forwards are standing at the blue line and covered.
The defenseman then usually has to fire it deep and give up possession. That kind of crap happens a lot. - Jsaquella
Sometimes people will be covered but it helps to have a defenseman who can skate the puck out of the zone to help. The Flyers don't always make the right decision in their own end.
The forwards arent the greatest at helping either. I just think having one or two guys who can skate the puck will help open up the ice. |

Not denying that, but when you have guys standing still, it makes thing worse. The thing is, it happens too often-AND with too many different players- for me to chalk it up to idiot players. If if these (frank)ers are that dumb, they should be open to trading them all. |

Absolutely. The Flyers need a couple of puck moving defenseman to help reduce the pressure getting the puck out of their own end. Hopefully they can find a solution. |

That usually, as Jsaq said, results in a dump in, with the Flyers forwards stationary at the other teams blueline. No way are you going to be able to get on the puck that way. And then we see the all too familiar scene of two forwards in aggressively on the forecheck, with no chance to get on the puck. One pass beats them both. The Flyers 3rd forward in a bad position. And the other team has a straight unchallenged skate, or wide open passing lanes up the ice. And an easy entry into the Flyers zone which leads to extended attack time for the opposition. This team has no secondary levels to it's pressure, and no neutral zone presence. The top teams pressure the puck all over the ice.
How often do you see the Flyers turn pucks over in the neutral zone? Which leads to an odd man break and transition offense? Not often. Put Giroux, Voracek, Read, and others in open ice with room to make plays. And this team's talent will show through. But the majority of time, this team has to fight through tough checking through the full length of the ice. They don't control the puck, and they don't win the puck possession game.

And it leads to a dump in, with the forwards having no momentum to get in on the puck. But they go in hell on wheels anyway. And one pass or one chip off the wall, and they're beaten. And then they have to skate like hell the length of the ice on the back check. Burns up a lot of energy. A lot of wasted energy.

I really do agree with their inability to create turnovers, as the other team is breaking up the ice. They dont do it enough, and even I will admit they often arent in a position to.
A little bit related to this, is when the Flyers do have an ability along the boards to win the puck, in both zones, I dont think they do so enough. Opposing d-men far too often win battles against this forward group down low, and cause them to make really stupid passes.
Lastly, when playing in their own zone, Flyer forwards are far too often outmatched, and beaten along the wall. Or in 1 on 1 board battles breaking up the ice. |

I think there is room for improvement. But I think the Flyers are competitive in board battles, and I don't view them as a soft team.

On a topic of young d-men that could be possibly brought in via trade.
I've always had a little thing for Ryan Ellis. Dont know if Nashville would even really consider making a deal with Philly unless they are raping them.
There are rumblings on the internet (simply from fans), that there needs to be a change in Nashville. Trotz has run stale, and teams have figured Nashville out. Just something to think about. |

Take it for what it's worth, but I recall Paul McCann (HB Preds blogger) tweeting a while back that Preds management is still pretty upset about that whole offer sheet thing. |

Yeah i dont see Nashville trading with Philly anytime soon in fact Im sure the whole deal ticked lots owners off especially small market ones. Nashville matched for principle purposes....I dont know that any player is worth 4 1st round picks. |

We are probably the only team crazy enough to put an offer out on the Weber contract after he becomes trade eligible. Perhaps they re-visit that? Tho, I'm not sure they don't ask for Jake instead of B Schenn or Coots after the year they've had. |

They should be upset they didn't ink Suter when they had the chance. They could have had 8 1st rounders these next 4 years if they so chose. Boo hoo. |

They'll be lucky to get any decent free agents in town given the money they owe Weber and how cheap they are otherwise. This is actually the reason why I cant see Weber still in Nashville 3 years down the road. Who has been their biggest signing? Gaustad? And they had to blow a 1st just to get him in town. Ridiculous. |
