Yeah, the "system" has little to do with tonight's turd of a game. - wolfhounds
I actually like the way the Flyers are playing tonight systems wise. They're playing without that reckless aggressiveness. The 3rd guy is staying high. The problem is they need to find another gear. And the defensive breakdowns continue to plague the team. |

They're mentally dead for the season. It's not going to improve. It is what it is
If somehow they had 5-6 more points in the standings right now I think they'd play better. But I think mentally the reality of this poopty season has kicked in. And while that probably shouldn't effect pro athletes, I think it ultimately does. - eayost
I agree. For whatever reason. They're a dead team. Not enough emotion in their game.

early in the game they were still sending 3 guys in deep and get trapped on the boards behind the play. they seem to have shifted their plan some.
they're horrendous in their own zone. i mean how do you let a guy behind your 2 d in front of the goalie at ES? inexcusable. |

I'd consider that a 2nd warning shot and finally take the hint. |

As someone who defends the system, its hard to change things up in the cluster(frank) season.
Everything is too condensed, and they dont get much practice time.
Those little dumbass individual mistakes, even by key veterans, still haunt them.
I'd be very open to having quite a few guys off this roster. |

Carolina has Ward, and Ellis injured, why isn't Holmgren trading Boucher or Leighton to the Canes?

maybe they're being less recklessly aggressive, but those unforced turnovers are still there for all the world to see.

It's not systemic, at least not tonight. It's a lack of discipline. The third NY goal had the forwards all get caught high, and then nobody picked up Nash down low. The lack of discipline is part of my issues with the coach.
Yes, it falls on the players, too, but the coach needs to lead the way there. Unless you'd agree that "demoting" a guy to the third line but continuing to use him on the PP and end up playing him 1:39 less than his average somehow sends a message of discipline |

I don't remember a Flyers team this poor in the defensive zone. Even the 2006 team, if I recall correctly, didn't have these kind of breakdowns.
just inexcusable.

No, it's not hard for a Coach to make changes. It might take a little bit of time for the players to adjust. But the point is that the adjustments that can be made should already be part of a teams systems play. Watch how the Rangers change in the 3rd to protect the lead. Good teams can play more then one way.
I agree about the little mistakes.

Seem to be moving the puck pretty well, just gotta get some more shots on net...and throw the puck at the net instead of looking for the perfect pass.
And don't take any more penalties. |

I think it's pretty clear that the Flyers really are lost in their own zone. And it's been that way all year. They made some adjustments on the forecheck which are long overdue. But the D zone coverage has not improved all year. I think that's a product of the Coach and his lack of attention to detail in the defensive game.
