He looks like the Jagr of the first half of the season last year. He faded in the latter half. This 1/2 season would actually have been a good season to keep him. If Homer had known when the season would start maybe he would not have let him go.

I think he would have helped, no doubt. But if some of these young players need to go through some growing pains, I'm glad they're getting it over with.
The point being that a deal with any of the pending UFA defense would likely require a second year. See what I'm getting at?
If they don't re-sign Timonen, they likely have to give Vishnovsky or Gonchar or whomever else a 2 year deal - Jsaquella
Thats if you decide to go after a player that age. The Flyers could sign a younger defenseman and give a longer deal. Either way it would cost $. I see what your saying.
I just think its a good signing for NY Islanders based on what they have and how much money they have.

There's not many under 35 defensemen that could be expected to be top 4 guys in the UFA class. The only one who is is Ron Hainsey.
It's a fine deal for the Isles, I'm simply talking about how it would affect the Flyers.
Ah yes, because our defense this year without Timonen would have been so great. - Jsaquella
The Flyers are going to have to play without Timonen at some point. Whether we think hes still a very good defenseman or not. That time is coming sooner rather than later.

It is, but it's better to have secured another year of Timonen, rather than get stuck with two of another veteran and have to worry about potential over 35 issues in another year.
It buys them an additional year without having to worry about cap troubles later.

I wouldnt look to sign a player thats over 35. I would look in another direction. Honestly, I dont think anyone on the market is going to be Timonen. My only point is the Flyers will have to look in another direction. I appreciate everything Timonen has done since being here and will respect his game but father time catches up to everyone.
You are right it does give them another year. Im just not sure hes worth the $6M.

He's not unless you factor in the fact that it is a player's market when it comes to his position. Timonen's agent knows the Flyers have no one to whom Kimmo's torch would pass. Not unless they want to get into the over-35 mess Jsaq alluded to. If you want someone under 35, name him, because it'll have to be via trade.
In other words, the only "other direction" they can take is to draft, develop, and wait.

They will have to do that anyways b/c hes only signed for one more season.
