If they are going to play in BP then they can be signed to try-out contracts for the rest of the season and then it doesn't count to the 50

So, for example, Strome has to sign an ATO to play for Bridgeport for the remainder of this season, but does his ELC count toward the 50-contract limit even though it doesn't kick in until next season?

You hit the nail on the head and the same goes for mayfield, now what I am not sure about is Garth signing Strome to an ATO so a year on his contract doesn't burn here or if he will fall within the min. games so a year doesn't burn.
