TSN: Dreger also tweeted that Islanders GM Garth Snow has no intention of trading defenceman Mark Streit because there is just a $500,000 gap per year (3 years) in contract talks with his captain.
Three years of Streit...
Bad move. My guess is it'll be another Witt situation...a year or two in we'll be begging for a buyout. - UIF
I dunno man. I think it would be a horrible message to the team to trade him for draft picks. Bad message for the fanbase too. Am I thrilled with his D? No, not at all. However he is solid ofensively and also a threat on the PP. Playoff teams need depth. If we trade Streit and Vis goes down, then you want Amac running your PP? Gotta keep Streit for the rest of the season. We have enough prospects in the system, enough of the draft pick and prospect trades already with this team. Would be nice if Snow actuallymade a move for an impact player but that wont happen. |

Aside from all the positives already mentioned, Carkner played a lot in the 3rd period mast night...and actually looked pretty damn good. Hopefully this is something that can continue down the stretch.
It was nice to see a one-goal lead in the 3rd and us continue to control the flow of play. There wasn't one time in the 3rd where I didn't think we were gonna finish the Jets off. It was a refreshing feeling. - potvin05

Carkner did look good Potvin. He brings much needed size and grit if he is on his game. Team had a strong 3rd as a whole. |

I don't know...we had the puck in their zone a lot. McDonald's line and Cizikas' line both played awesome. We had the better scoring chances and we took it to them. A lot of good cycling in the corners (even by Okposo) was good to see too.
I have to give credit where credit is due, Colin McDonald is a hockey player. Period. When we got him, i was like, who the (frank) is this guy, and we don't have a Bridgeport guy who can do what he does? Man, was I wrong about him. Just a hockey player, that's "all" he is. |

I understand the argument for keeping him for the rest of the season...don't necessarily agree, but I completely get what you're saying, and you very well could be right about the message it would send to the team. I guess I'd put my thoughts this way...I'd rather trade him than lose him for nothing, but I'd rather keep him for the rest of the season and lose him for nothing than sign him for three years. Nothing against Streit, I just don't think he's as good as he was when we got him, and if anything, he'll probably get worse in the coming years. I get that we need vets until the kids are ready, but I'd rather see the team bring in a vet that's a steadier presence in his own zone during the offseason rather than bring Streit back. Streit re-signing means we probably won't see another vet brought in back there for next year or the two after. |

If he can play the way he did last night, then I have no qualms about trading Streit.
I can't believe I'm gonna type these words, I'd have no problem with no trade today. The chemistry has come around nice, and these guys seem to FINALLY want to win. I think the Ottawa game a couple Tuesdays ago was their breaking point.
If a trade were to be made, I'd like a capable backup goalie or a rental forward. I don't really want to trade any of the 20 guys on the roster right now. |

Okposo gets too low to get any push- he plays half crouched most of the time, and then when he tries to hit the gas, he has no leverage. He's going to be slow anyway, but it would be nice if someone taught him HOW to skate. That might at least help with his strength along the boards. - dcb1
by no stretch of the imagination has okposo redeemed himself but he looks leaps and bounds better than he did in that beginning of the season.
btw, no one mentioned that streit reportedly rejected a 3year/15million deal from the isles....to trade or not to trade? if this is true, i dont even think its a question |

To be honest we do not need a big trade. I'd still like to see some type of addition though. I'm fine with trading Boyes. I like the idea of Nino on the first line. If the Isles make no trades and still make the playoffs there will not be a lot of complaints. If no moves are made and they miss the playoffs it will be storm the castle time. |

Note the term 'defensive' is never used with Streit. I'm fine with Vis handling the power play (I think he's better at it anyway). I am okay if we keep Streit not so much because of a concern for the message it sends if he's dealt but rather there's no point in shaking things up. With that said, my concern with Streit is that I think he's a total liability on defense. It seems to me he was never the same after his shoulder surgery a few years ago. So while he certainly skates well and has decent hands for a dman, I don't think his overall skillset makes him irreplaceable at this point. I'm certainly not going to sign him for big money on a 3 year deal just to ensure special teams depth on a likely one round playoff run.
If I'm Snow, and three years is a must, I'd probably offer him along the lines of $3 years 9 million. Let it work out to $4 mil next year, 3 the year after and 2 after that. If he's really seeking 3 years $15 million, they should be packing his bags for him and calling GM's like mad. |

It was uncomfortable watching Peter Ruttgazer (sp?) interview them during the game. It was pretty clear he was starting to lose it about halfway through. - UIF
that guy is awful, look at him interview the mother, clearly someone is talking to him while she is answering the questions and he isnt paying attention, he holds the microphone by her for a good 5 seconds after she was obviously done talking...what a putz!!! |

Exactly. Theres no (frank)ing way he'd turn down 5 million a year for 3 years. I'd have his head examined and his contract torn up if that was the case. |

lets play out scenarios (assuming he isnt resigned today):
-streit is traded, islanders make the playoffs- id say this is ideal!
-streit is traded, islanders dont make the playoffs- sucks, but at least it was a solid season and not another pap situation
-streit isnt traded, islanders make the playoffs- ok but now streit may leave for nothing
-streit isnt traded, islanders dont make the playoffs- poop hits the fan.
i say trade him. i think he is very replaceable, i honestly think hickey can do just as good a job at this point as streit...if donovan is ready id bring him up or if a dman is returned in this "Deal" id play him...i just think his value is WAY overpriced and if this is an opportunity to get a #1 and a prospect/player than garth has to do it

Streit is not worth 3 years...more like what Visnovsky got...if you're going to keep him. Id like to see this but will never happen:
1. Trade Streit for a #1 pick...
2. Trade Boyes for a #2 pick....
3. Take one of your #1 and a prospect (maybe Nino) and package it for Pominville.
4. Get McBean from Carolina...stay at home defenseman that can play the PP... |

number 4 is not an option with pitkanen out for the year.. number three is an awful idea.. GUYS NOTHING IS HAPPENING TODAY STOP WITH ALL THIS.... garth is not trading any prospects..if anything happens it reasoner for a late round pick..but streit isn;t going anywhere |
