Source in Minnesota says deal is Pommer for Hacket, Larsson AND a first and a second.
Overpayment of the Year? - shekkie
Haaaaaaaaa buffalo will still edge out flyers for playoffs with all these great picks. Really a sad state of affairs seeing what other teams are getting |

Thoughts:
Philly helps Columbus clear cap/salary restrictions to acquire Gaborik (taking Mason's 2.9 mil. cap).
By helping Columbus clear cap space, Flyers have helped facilitate the trade of one of our enemy's top snipers (Rangers) thereby boosting Philly's chances of sneaking into #8 seed.

An injury prone 2nd line center, an injured grinder and a prospect defenseman...yeah, overwhelming. - Jsaquella
I think they did well. they really needed to get rid of that contract. for whatever reason it just wasn't working in NY this year. look at columbus and what they got for nash. on the surface the production doesn't look great but they have played far better this year. thinking getting those 3 may really help the rangers long run |

Feels a little better but still raises more questions than settles. - shekkie
Not really. My guess is, they have made the decision to buy out Bryzgalov and landing Mason is simply getting a head start on the goalie spot for next year. They know that they'll have money now and other options, be it a trade or free agent and pull the pin now. |

3rd rd pick for a rental back up when their chance at the play offs is very slim is what the deal amounts to.
I can't see them keeping Mason and Bryz both next season at ~8.5 M cap hit for the two goalies - Marc D
To me it shows that they haven't yet decided whether to buy out Bryz. But if they do, they want a good plan B to go to. |

and it's the old hindsight being 20/20 as well. When Bob was here there were a million comments about how he had fatal flaws, and would never be a top notch goalie.
he's had a good half season and now some people think he's Hasek in his prime. - FlyerGuy
There were also a lot of people saying the team should just grow with him because he has the potential to be really good. |

It's an OK return for a guy that didn't fit anymore. I'm not overly impressed with any of the three guys they got, though |

Mason is a guy they have liked for awhile, who they feel they can fix. It's time to just wait and see now. - Jsaquella
he's a leftie. he can't be fixed. unless you get burgess meredith to tie his arm to his body. |

Bob's had a pretty nice stretch of games for CBJ this year.
Know who had a pretty nice stretch of games a few years back and was rookie of the year?
Steve Mason.
Point is: I think it's a little too early to be turning Bob into Ken Dryden and Steve Mason into Jim Carey. - johndewar
Exactly. Let's also be VERY REAL here when talking about Bob... I don't care what ANYONE says, he would NOT have saved this team. Or, we wouldn't suddenly be in the playoffs or in contention. We have too many underlying TEAM issues. Sure, Bob may have helped, but he wouldn't have been much better than Bryz, in my opinion. |

I think you're right. I fully expect a presser with Holmgren saying that Bryz's future with the team is in no way affected by this move and he's our goalie for the full length of his contract.

Actually, the thing I liked about him was he had two things - raw athletic talent and a fierce work ethic, which to me meant a better than good chance he'd actually reach his potential.
It's the same combination I admire in Giroux! |

Lots of players have huge potential, that means....
Nothing unless there is results. Playing the potential game is pointless. Martin St. Louis had very little potential to play in the NHL when he was in Calgary. - Glak18
I just pointed out the results that the players I named were getting. As an example, you called Voracek scoring at a full season pace of 81 points, unimpressive. |
