Me three.
I don't think it is unreasonable speculation that the Mason trade is a preemptive move to buy out Bryzgalov. But I don't think that's going to happen this Summer. But saying that, I'm not dismissing it as a possibility. I think they negotiate a lesser deal with Mason as a backup. And evaluate the situation next off season - MJL
Agreed on all fronts. That would be the best case scenario here. |

The general sense I have is that other NHL general managers tried to convince Paul Holmgren that Sean Couturier’s ceiling was defensive FWD.

Which is why most teams low-balled the Flyers with offers. Philly management views #14 very, very highly.

B. He did not make a panic move. He added one role player through waivers. And added a talented young goalie who has lost his way, fairly cheaply. If he'll sign a deal with a lower AAV. Well worth the risk.

I get the sense that the other GMs all would love Couts, and to try and steal him for what they could.
Every single trade offer with another team for any decent player starts with asking for Couts.
Bishop for Couts was the latest today. Glad they said no. |

When you never, ever draft defenseman high it's also a huge bargaining chip for the other side to hold the upper hand in any conversation for a D man. |

If and when they do decide to trade him it better be for the player who is a long term solution on the first D pair.
Until then you keep him. |

Agreed. You have Bryz locked up. He isn't Marty or Roy but you sure as heck don't go and trade one of your top pieces to replace the guy. |

B: He did not make any dumb trades involving one of the young core players for a very minimal chance at making the playoffs. Added a goalie that gives options going into next season. Picked up Hall as an ok replacement for Talbot going down.
Does not deserve an A because:
Didn't see the need for the Harry Z for Rosehill trade.
He did not immediately make the team better but I do believe they will address that this summer. |

I agree, just thought I'd ask. I like Lehner a lot more than Bishop, but still would need more to pull the trigger. |

The trade deadline is not a time to buy if you are not gearing up for a long playoff run. That said he should have moved Rusty for a pick. Gag and Knubs too if there were any offers.
Hall was a nice little pickup. Mason gives you an actual option to backup Bryz. Harry Z for Rosehill is what it is. I think we were done with Z and he never had much value at all. A fighter is probably the only way you got someone that would ever see NHL action in return for Z. |
