I'd never want to see a tank job.
(However, I wouldn't have minded if the Phils rolled over for one game in the last series against the Braves a couple of seasons ago). - 77rams
I know!
Funny, my buddy was saying that during that last game of the season. I said, you don't lose on purpose. You win and deal with whom ever it is you face...

you're absolutely right. but the hole they dug themselves (imo, at least) necessitates running that risk. bryz being a nub by the time the playoffs come around is a secondary concern to doing everything to make it, is what i mean - FlyerMike18

Sign both Mike Smith and buyout Bryz. Sign fa A. Khudobin to be the goalie of the future. Mason has too many issues and will most likely continue the slide. - flyerdude17
What kind of contract would you want to sign smith to?
Personally I want nothing to do with smith. For playing in a "defense first" system in Phoenix, his numbers are identical to bryz's. His save % is. 901 and gaa is 2.83. Bryz is at. 899 and 2.82

I do not want to buyout Bryz.
But if for some reason they do I would look at two year deal for Tim Thomas. Thomas/Mason would be a good duo and you'd hope Mason could get himself turned around by the end of the Thomas deal.
hopefully history repeats itself.. I am hoping that we keep it rolling in the next 2 games.. if so, we have a shot. - Hextall271
"You just regroup and figure out what the plan is moving forward, if you're part of it or not. That’s something you guys have to talk to Darcy about. It’s something I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about and certainly something I can’t speculate on because I’ve never known what Darcy’s going to do…I have to talk to Darcy about it. This is obviously something that hasn’t been planned out." - Ryan Miller, on the direction of the Buffalo Sabres
Wow, I wish we had non-confrontational and toe-the-line elite goaltender Ryan Miller on our team.

I don't want to buyout bryz either, at least not after this season. Next year is still up in the air for me. This is one of the biggest reasons I wish contracts could be renegotiated in the nhl, if bryz was making something along the lines of 3.5-4.25 per year I don't think we're having this conversation.
Didn't feel like wading through the river of bullpoop. 4 game winning streak and we get moaning and crying. Some days this thread looks like the comments section of Philly.com - Jsaquella
Based on the way they were playing prior to the Boston game, there was zero reason to expect a 4 game win streak, or even a two game win "streak". Hell they had trouble winning two periods in a row, let alone games.
Again, like when assessing blame, everyone involved should get credit.
Laviolette made tweaks that have been embraced and been effective. The players are executing better. The GM added pieces that played very solidly against Washington and Toronto. Hopefully having the deadline off their shoulders will help Couturier and Brayden Schenn.
Personally, I'd have been happy if they showed some fight and went down with a good effort. They've injected themselves into the middle of the race and deserve to be there. - Jsaquella

I wouldn't sign Thomas - and would hope they wouldn't, especially to a 2-year deal due to his being over 80 35.
So the big question is: Will Bryz be bought out and if so when? My answer to the first part is that unless Bryz really turns it up down the stretch and leads the team on a deep playoff run, he is gone after the season. While his play for the most part has been ok, at a 9 year cap hit of 5.7 million, ok just ain't gonna cut it.
My best guess for next year is that Mason is signed for around 2 million and a veteran is brought in to compete with him also for around 2 million. Couple that with a buyout of Briere and the Flyers should have more than enough space under the cap to both upgrade the D and resign their own players.
I re-listening to the interviews Mason gave after the trade, it really strikes me just how bad the flow of communication was between him and the Jackets coaches.
For instance, for a couple of years he wore equipment that was too small for him because he was under the impression that it was the largest size he was allowed to wear under NHL rules. He was getting beat up with it, and either the team told him that it was illegal to wear bigger gear or misunderstood his issues with the equipment.
The minimal cost makes him a worthwhile risk. - Jsaquella
Absolutely! Getting a 24 year old goalie with starting potential for a 3rd round pick is a good deal.

FWIW, my take on Bryz/Mason/Buyout

I'm thinking bryz is back for another season and we see a real competition next yr
