Bill, I'm curious as to if you think Philly should have sent coots to the minors for a few years like leafs did with kadri? I know he played his roll well last year but it's been obvious this year he could have used time in minors to work on his overall game.

Yep I can't wait to see Ghosty! And Alt sounds good as well.

Not going to hold my breath on ghost. Watching the under 20 championships he did fine on pp but he wasn't very strong in his own end. I think US team scratched or cut his minutes way down at the end. Solid prospect just a ways away yet

C'mon Grossmann!

Wow, hope Wellwood recovers completely from that injury...very scary sounding.

Yeah. That pic of his skate that is floating around is ugly.

I'm actually not that sold yet on Lauridson. Maybe someday? But I won't cry if he gets sent back down. I find I hold my breath when he's on the ice. I think Huskins has done a better job. And Gus has gained a lot of confidence out there. He's far from perfect but I'd be ok with Lauridson waiting till next season to get more ice time.
And yeah I hope they do play Mason in net as I'd like to see if we can trust him before we throw him to the wolves. But I seriously doubt they do. I bet it's gonna be Bryz until next week and then we might see him during our back to back (not that Montreal and NY Rangers aren't scary).

It's a pretty weak pool compared to most of the other teams in the league. But the cupboard isn't entirely bare. I think the Flyers had a good draft in 2012 that could produce multiple future pros (Laughton, Stolarz, Gostisbehere, possibly Leier or Willcox or Vasiliev), although no stars.

If they lose tomorrow night, I'm guessing it's Steve Mason against Ottawa on Thursday.

he got suspended and the team played very well without him, when he came back they didn't want to mess up what they had going

We caught some of the games but definately not most and I thought he looked pretty good. Not the biggest guy, but he seemed smarter than the average brick (except for one stupid penalty which he got suspended for - which also might explain why he sat a bit more later) and he had decent movement. Yeah he got carried away sometimes but nothing I think a good partner wouldn't knock out of him.

Of course I was so tired of the Seth Jones = "the next coming" when I thought he was only OK, I could have puked

If they lose in regulation tomorrow and particularly if Bryz plays poorly again, then Mason should see plenty of game time over the rest of the season.

I hope that every player on the Flyers and the Phantoms will have moved over to wearing kevlar socks soon.

- Feanor

Open question: Is there anything about the kevlar socks that makes them more restrictive or less comfortable to wear?

Because of age restrictions, he couldnt be assigned to the AHL and the Flyers thought there wasnt anything to be gained by sending him back to juniors.

This is a guess but they might be either a different thickness and/or don't breathe the same way.

I think Lauridson goes down. And Rightly so, he got a great opportunity and now I think it's time for him to go back down and build on that. I think getting called up and playing well will give him a lot of confidence back on the Phantoms. But I think we need more of the skill set Gus brings versus Lauridson. It's good to know they have some other D they can call up though.

Thanks for the brief report on Alt Bill. I was wondering what type of defensemen he was being projected as. He seemed to have one good season of points but took a step back this season. So I wasn't sure what his norm was supposed to be.

I figure it's something like that, but either way it's odd to me that there wasn't been a widespread switch. It's not like visors, where you're going from having nothing to having an appliance, they're already wearing socks. Might as well get that extra bit of protection, right?

Right winger Tyler Kennedy acknowledged that discomfort is the main problem players have with the socks, and said that seeing what happened to Karlsson won't prompt him to try them.
"I guess I'm taking a risk," he said.

Capitals defenseman John Erskine complained the sock was thick around the ankle.

Yeah I know why philly rationalized keeping him but if they sent him to jr's last year he could have gone to ahl this year. I think they rushed him a little and he definately could have used that time to play more minutes and "offensive" minutes to work on his game instead of being a shutdown 3rd line center here. He's struggled here this year badly overall and his game looks to need extended work. Ie skating, shooting

I see us making a fortune by creating kevlar half socks / leg warmers... Basically just the top half of the sock. The boot on the skate would hold the end down around the ankle and the sock would go up from there. So now imagine all your favorite players in pink leg warmers... I dare ya.

God these players are d bags. Put the damn Kevlar socks on morons. Be comfortable at home with your millions of dollars in contracts. Put the damn visor on too. " its a risk I'm taking". Never understand nhlpa allowing their players to be so dumb. It's an obvious safety benefit and they will get used to them just like the visors. Sorry for the rant but how pissed would you be if g was lost like karllson because of that.

I know Laughton is just 18, precluding him from regular AHL action, but do you think he is that much of a lock to play in the NHL next year?
- johndewar

Yes, he's pretty much a lock unless he has an awful camp and preseason.

It's aggravating to see/hear, I agree, but on the other hand they're still entitled to make their own decisions about their careers. Sometimes, a razor thin advantage or hindrance can be the difference between success and failure. I don't like the decision to play in less safe equipment, but it's understandable.

No, I think Couturier is where he needs to be. He was bored in the AHL during the lockout, and I don't think the several months he spent there during the lockout really helped him (or Schenn) all that much, either for the short-term or long-term.
