It has to do with one thing, and one thing only. How the team and the player is doing. They have to get the dirt from somewhere. The same crap went on a few years ago about a couple of players who shall remain nameless. And if the Flyers continue to struggle, Giroux is up next. Only a matter of time, unless the team starts contending. - MJL
So, what you're saying is, we're going to enjoy watching Giroux's rise to true elite status on another team?

The only thing more sad than the Philly media are the idiots in the thread discussing when the owner dies, almost as if they've marked it on their calendar with smiley faces and exclamation points. The owner is responsible for Flyers hockey being as important and impactful as it is today. Forget the fact that they've already won a few cups in the 70's and are contenders in 9 out of every 10 years. Ignore the fact that the owner is a lightning rod for foundations and charities. Let's just cry because we haven't won a cup recently It's as if fans feel entitled to their team winning the cup every year because they're fans and spend money on the team every year. Try to acknowledge the fact that there are 29 other teams that have fan-bases and finances to support their team. - steelydan
Count me as one. Theoretically you should nix 10 teams off the bat like the panthers, coyotes, etc. because their jokes of franchises in places that dont support hockey and are relevant once in a blue moon. I dont care about charity.
A Cup has never been won in my lifetime. They are contenders many years bc they sell off the farm for old UFA's to get them "into the dance".
Its Al Davis running the Raiders. Just a little more succesful. Its rings true |

exactly why spending 1st rounds picks on a dman is risky as hell - Crimsoninja
Take no risks, have no benefits.
Other teams take the risks, and employ these players. The same players the Flyers would love to have, and will need to overpay for. |

As every day passes, I get more pissed off they traded away Bob.
Impatience has set this team back 5 years. - the deaninator
If Bob were playing in this poopstorm, he might never have reached any level of competence. He'd have been a curled up ball of angst in a corner somewhere reciting Pushkin. |

You see it as one bad year, cool. I see it as a trend, especially in recent years of the things that have been talked about. Let's hope your outlook of staying the course is the right one, with how management builds and upkeeps this team. I have my doubts.
Forget those days of glory, because they do not matter now. - flyer_nutter
They went to the Cup Finals in recent years. In 2010.

I don't see anyone here acting like they want Ed to die. But they realize it may take that for any real change to happen.
This is different from Bill Wirtz, whom I said could not die soon enough. I'm not proud of that. But I own it. He was a cancerous growth on the team and city. That is NOT true of Ed Snider.
However, when Ed does die, there is no personal owner of this team. It becomes a corporate ownership. And those aren't so successful either.
We don't have a Rocky Wirtz able to fire his little brother and say everyone has to interview to keep their job at every level.

So the Flyers should never draft a d-men unless he is ranked top 5. |

This whole thread is like some sort of giant pity party. It's one bad (and short) season. It happens. Get over yourselves for crying out loud.
This is one of the most successful hockey franchises ever. We've won more playoff games in the past 10 years than all but one team. We're perennial playoff contenders, with very few exceptions. Our overall winning percentage is second in the league behind only Montreal. And we still hold the record for the longest unbeaten streak in the NHL. It's not like we're the Panthers or some poop and we just suck ad nauseum.
Yes, we haven't won a Cup in a while. And that can certainly be frustrating. I want a Cup just as much as the next guy. But please stop with all the BS about how screwed up the organization is, and how we need wholesale organizational changes, have no identity, etc., etc. Is it perfect? No, but even including this season, this is still one of the best franchises in all of sports. There may be some changes this summer. It wouldn't surprise me at all since it's been a down year this year for sure. But we'll be back. We always are.
So cowboy the (frank) up for crying out loud. It's one bad year. And a short one at that. Some of you folks are worse than the frigging Courier-Post with your BS. - BringBack25

I dont think they have enough quality pieces to be a consistently elite team, not even close. No matter how they play. They will need the drafting to come through, and do it well for a few years imo.
My issue with the current group isn't talent. It takes more than talent, statistical production and flare to win games. - flyer_nutter
I didn't say an elite team. I said a good team. This team's biggest issue this year was the guy in the suit behind the bench. And injuries.

Yes, they sell the farm to get old UFA's. Giroux, Coots, Schenn x2, Vorcacek, Read, Laughton, Simmonds. They really need to find a way to unload the old fogies and see if we can get some youth back What a joke... |

We do not know if they tried to find replacements in trades, but the last real young d-man the Flyers brought in via a trade was Coburn. Perhaps Meszaros.
The Flyers had a choice to take Hamilton, but decided on Coots. Laughton is another example. I dont like the best player approach, especially when you have such glaring needs. Needs that cannot be easily fixed via a trade as we have seen. - flyer_nutter
I am 100% in favor of drafting the best player.

Yes, the Flyers were in the finals. And the team that beat them is an elite franchise still now. The Flyers is not currently elite on the ice, where it counts for me. It is merely elite at the bottom line, which is what the Robertses care about. |

Right. Had to flirt with inconsistency all year and have Boucher beat the Rags in the shootout.
This team has flirted with chronic inconsistency ever since the "new" nhl began.
Those glory days, and how teams were built, how you could buy a team are long dead.
This organization can move toward building a more consistent elite team, or continue putting its hopes into players that you hope and pray show up, or have questionable defensive games to begin with. It can keep doing what it is doing. |

What real change are you looking for, exactly? Was selling off the two core pieces of your franchise, Richards and Carter, not revolutionary enough? Sometimes, when you have a bad season, you don't necessarily have to blow things up in order to prove to fans that you're committed to winning.
Instead, the Flyers can and will likely be looking to trade from a position of surplus (young center) in order fulfill a need (offensively-minded defenseman). And poof, the fans will stop crying.
And yes, "realizing" that Ed may have to die before any "real" changes take place is still pretty scummy. |
