They tried that when they needed a goalie and ended up with Boucher and Ouellett.
Thankfully the Rangers took Sanguinetti the year the Flyers drafted Giroux or we'd still be waiting for him to develop into a top 4.
I don't know why the Flyers can't pick D or goalies but history backs it up. - mayorofangrytown
Giroux is a classic example of a team getting lucky. He wasn't their target, he fell to them. Same thing with Couturier. The Flyers likely had him rated very high, and when he fell to them, they had to take him over Hamilton.
Look at Shea Weber. He was drafted 49th in the 03 draft. Anyone think the Preds knew exactly what they were getting there? When they drafted Konstantin Glazachev with the 35th pick, and Kevin Klein with the 37th pick? Weber was the 4th player they took in that draft. They got lucky. Examples of this in the NHL draft are endless. |

I agree that most teams shouldnt go by need. In the Flyers case, where that need is so clearly evident I think you do.
I am not saying go crazy and draft Nurse 3rd overall. The Flyers knew they would have this need, and should have done a better job to address it when they had the chance. Instead of putting all the hope in FA or Weber. - flyer_nutter
You can never go into a draft narrow minded like that with one position, if they aren't the best available player you then reach and you end up more than likely missing then hitting.
If a forward is the best on the board I take it & do it again without thinking. |

I wish we had a little more luck with defensemen and goalies and anything that falls out of the first round. Maybe Gostisbehere and Stolarz will start a run. |

Who says Coots is worse? Or is it that Hamilton fills a greater need and wasnt a real stretch in drafting at the time. - flyer_nutter
The Flyers don't need a 5th defenseman, which is basically the role Hamilton has played. He's barely used on the PK, and he's 3rd in PP minutes. He's also facing some of the weaker competition on the Bruins.
Yes, organizational depth is an issue. Yes, they needed some help on the blue line this season. That said, had they tried to make everyone more responsible two way players before the injuries really piled up, then I think they would have been in much better shape.
They drafted 4 defensemen last year. They traded for another. They didn't ignore the deficiency.

I look at the defense that Holmgren has put on the ice year after year. From my seat, the defense this year is an anomaly. And it has heightened the awareness of the Flyers lack of ability to draft and develop defenseman. I'm not saying that doesn't have to get better. It absolutely does. But I say give Holmgren and chance, and see what he does.

They could do a better job in scouting defensemen and goalies. That's a legitimate complaint. |

This draft has a really good amount of depth to with with talent but we and the Flyers will still have to be patient with any position they select, letting them develop is something I think they have to and should do going forward and they will be rewarded more often.

Something tells me that if they're not sitting in the top three and a forward is next on their board, they're gonna reach a bit away from their slotted pick and nab the next highest Dman.
I just have a feeling. |

It is the first year that Holmgren didn't manage to land the pieces he went after. That hardly makes it a trend. I doubt he sat on his hands all year, either. He just-wisely-refused to overpay to fill the hole in a trade.
I worry that the coach and GM weren't on the same page on several things, but that can be fixed in any number of ways. And if they decide to keep Laviolette and try to remake the roster to play his system, then I'd bet Holmgren manages to get it done. |

Tonight I'm watching London & Kitchener again, want to see how Stolarz bounces back from his worse game of the playoffs.
That and to watch the 3 others they have that will be 1st round picks. |

To be honest it wouldn't be a reach if they took Nurse or Ristolainen in the top 10 they are very worthy of it, it does come down to how they feel they will project and then what spot they put them on their draft board. |

Depends on who is on the board. Jones is very likely the only defenseman in the top ten that can be reasonably expected to step right into the NHL. If they are at six and Monahan or Barkov, or both are on the board, it'd be a fairly risky move to go with Nurse or Ristolainen instead.
My view is, you have to get a good NHLer in the first round. And with the young core they have, I don't expect another top ten pick for awhile. They really need to make this one count. |

Klotz might literally have fallen to them, when he tripped shaking Holmer's hand for the first time. |

haha, I just mentioned him because he models his game after Mike Richards. But is a really solid player but might be one who settles into a 3rd line center as a pro. |
