Eh, I'm ok with all of that. They don't hold us at gun point to buy that stuff, although they did hold the season ticket holders at gun point to buy tickets to all 3 events (Flyers, Alums, and Phantoms).
I still say they could do that outdoor event in Philly every year and Flyers fans would sell it out, every year. It was a great opportunity for people who don't follow the team obsessively or go to the Wells Fargo Center weekly to see the team play in a really cool setting. The whole thing was a blast. - johndewar
They've already been doing the Heritage Classic right? So they've already been doing another outdoor game. Maybe the Heritage Classic is not as exciting to fans not at the game as the Winter Classic due to marketing, but I bet it's special to the people that go to the game. Each one of these will be special to the people/families who go. |

i still think there are some good options for D out there in the offseason...
mcbain, diaz, ballard (im assuming he gets bought out), might be some good pieces...
the year after when timonen retires though....that's when it's gonna get tricky. - sarmen25
That year there will be more prospective UFAs, and the kids they drafted and traded for this past year will be a step closer. They're also likely to have a little more cap room to work with after the 2013-14 season |

If it wasn't for the glut of young centermen needing to step into bigger roles combined with the cap dropping, I'd even be hesitant to nuke Briere. |

True, but that was 1 US game on NYs day and 1 Game in Canada on Canada Day (or some Canadian holiday). It will be cool for the people to go, but it's saturation for me. I won't make an effort to tune in to them, and I probably won't go to the next Flyers outdoor game because the tix will be $$$. |

ya...just checked the UFAs in 2014 and there are some good ones out there..but i also think teams will re-sign them before becoming UFA...

To be honest, for the non-Flyers winter classics, the only one I made an effort to tune into was the Pittsburgh-Buffalo game. |

Possible, but hopefully the Flyers will add one or two this summer who can be locked up for four years or so |

i'm a known mez apologist, but i think he proved he could play after the achilles surgery. he was their best defenseman in several games before the shoulder stuff imo - Don'tForgetTocchet
if he comes back healthy next season and can be the puck mover on the 2nd or 3rd pairing and get 2nd PP unit time, that would be outstanding, best case scenario
with Gus and now maybe even Ollie looking like possible viable options for the third pair, they have a decent fall back position if Mez isn't healthy

Both Orpik and Letang are on that list and I suspect Ray Shero will find a way to keep them both along with their high priced centers.

I want to nuke Briere's contract, even just to try to upgrade the RW position.
Would love to see Nathan Horton here on the right side of the 2nd line. As long as he doesn't want a "Briere-esque" contract. |

Way too much hoopla. One of the reasons I'm not a big Super Bowl fan. The product rarely lives up to the hype. |

i think it's definitely worth giving St. Louis a call and see what's going on with their 2 FA defencemen...
not saying it'll be easy to land either of them, but i'm more than willing to bet that Homer will look around the league for some upgrade...
hell, he got Carle and Meszaros here, and no one really thought that would happen...

speaking of Gagne, what UFA's do you see coming back? - nastyflyergirl
Would love Gagne back next year.
Gagne/Couts/Talbot (or another right winger, ?Read) and you have the makings of a very good two way line.
Gagne has really impressed me the way he has been playing since coming back here.
Could he stay healthy in an 82 game season? |
|
|
|
I agree. Will also add that he has improved in the course of each of his two seasons since turning pro. At start of 2011-12, I was concerned he'd be ECHL-bound and never heard from again. Now he's a player who has shown he is a worthy callup. With another year of improvement, he'd be a viable third-pairing option in a full NHL season. - bmeltzer

I'm not expecting him to fully recover, but would love it if he does.
He has a great one timer from the blue line, something they sorely need.
Speaking of which, Gus got that shot off last night pretty quickly! |

Yup, agree.
Was just throwing it out there since folks were hand wringing about his contract. - johndewar
Here is the issue that is being overlooked. You absolutely could place Meszaros on LTIR and grab the exemption. But to do what with? Let's look back into history a short time ago. The Flyers counted on Meszaros for this Season. So after all the player moves were made. All of the good Free Agents are signed. Meszaros got hurt in the Summer time. So if it turns out that Meszaros can't stay healthy, or isn't ready for the Season. You're back in the realm of adding the Foster's of the World. Or calling up a Phantom. Or making a trade. So really, it's something that needs to be figured out much sooner then later. Like by the end of June, if they're going to count on Meszaros or not. |
