I agree. I think we want to see them win and play well. And I think that's important. But at this point as a fan, if they lose, the reaction isn't disapointment. It's were getting a higher pick.

Yup, that sums it up nicely.

Goalie pads of today are ridiculous.

There's got to be a middle ground somewhere.

I think I read somewhere (twitter maybe?) that they are thinking of making the pads smaller this offseason.

In context that looks completely ridiculous. I agree.

Wasn't Mason the guy who was using pads that were smaller then allowed at one point?

He definitely fixed that problem.

Go back and reread what I posted. I said, it CAN be a springboard. So let's look at the two teams you mentioned. One team, the Eagles, is a team that lacked talent. That is not the case with this Flyers team. And the Phillies team, is a veteran team that is on the downside. Which is also unlike this current Flyers team. But the way, the Phillies are in what, the 3rd week of a 162 game Season? You already have them pegged?
- MJL

Your the one saying the phillies are on the downside. Im looking at their first 3 weeks and saying wow that great 2nd half when games were almost meaningless hasnt exactly gotten them off to a good start.

The eagles and flyers are similar in that there is enough talent on both teams to have better records than what they were. Eagles layed down at the end of last year. Will that have any bearing on this new season with a new coaching staff?

We'll see

I can't get too excited finishing 9th

If Laughton sticks with the Flyers going into next year (as many have speculated), the Flyers will, once again, have a logjam at center.
- johndewar

Eventually, but for his rookie season, playing on the 4th line, stepping up when needed and getting a little pk time sounds about right to me.

I agree with cheapening the outdoor game concept. That said, it will be a huge money maker for the NHL and the teams involved.

That's how you recoup lockout lost dollars in one fell swoop. Ka-Ching!

Couldn't they just fine Pierre Maguire $100 every time he mentions Crosby? Not only would the league be flush with cash, but they could probably pay off the U.S. national debt too!!!

I'll make my point clearer. Neither the Eagles or Phillies are a team that is in the same position in terms of team development as the Flyers are currently. The Eagles last year had a drastic lack of talent, and the Phillies are a successful veteran team who is on the downside of it's window.
My point is valid, so I'll repeat it. The Flyers finishing this Season strong, can have a positive effect on the team going forward to next Season.

I couldn't agree with you more! Forget the fact, that I can't bring myself to root for them to lose, especially against the f'n Rangers or Devils, I want to see kids like Lauridsen, Gus, Manning, Coots, B. Schenn etc.. give their all every shift and for that to happen, the vets need to do the same.

Whether they draft, 6,7,8,9,10,11 or whatever, they will still get a good player and who's to say that the 9th worst team doesn't win the lottery anyway?

Finishing with a high draft position can have an even bigger effect on the team's long term future.

I'm not going to debate winning some games when the pressure is off is necessarily going to boost this team for next season. It's about playing well under pressure and this team just a week ago flunked that losing 4 straight "must-win" games.

And yet, Bernie somehow found them big enough to post a 1.89 GAA and a .933 SV% back in '73-74.

Amazing.

Finish strong. They have a young team, and don't want to introduce a culture of losing. Let the young guys play and hope they play well to build on in the future.
- jmatchett383

Agreed. Culture of losing is the last thing we want. If the sporatic bits good play tell us anything is that there is talent and ability here. Who knows, maybe with a full season and league Parity we could be back int he race had we say 20 more games or so...

I'm glad the tone from managment seems to be standing pat with possible and hopefull upgrades on puck moving D.

Too many people are getting too worked up about the draft. Sure picking first would be nice, but history has shown that you can often get just as good or a better player picking 10-15 as you do picking 5-10 or even 1-5. Scouts aren't always right, nor do some players ever develop that way we think they will.

In 1982 the Flyers took Ron Sutter with the 4th pick, a few picks later a guy named Scott Stevens was drafted

In 1991, Pat Falloon was the consensus #2 pick and was taken 2nd by San Jose; I'm sure they would have been much happier with the 6th or 7th picks, Peter Forsberg and Derian Hatcher.

More recently, I'm pretty sure a lot of teams wish they had grabbed Claude Giroux in 2006 well before the Flyers got him after pick 20; and it is starting to look like pick #7 in 2007, Jake Voracek is going to be just as good or better than pick #2, JVR and much better than pick #3, Kyle Turris

So take a deep breath, root for your team, and who knows, maybe a miracle happens and they run the table, get a boatload of help and sneak into the playoffs!

So true, whats also funny is that guys who were 6'2 210 were considered huge. Lauridsen would look like godzilla on this team!

Nice writeup.

A higher draft position affects all rounds not just the first. A high 2nd rd pick is almost like a late 1st rd pick, etc.
