Not even a top 5 pick? - jstross
A 1st rounder and a top 5 are 2 different things.
Also, another thing about Hartnell" there are 29 teams and fanbases that absolutely hate him, #1 being Pittsburgh. He creates a distraction just based on his reputation. If he went to another team, he'd probably be a villain in this town by the 2nd time he played against Philly. That would be a huge loss. I'm just 100% against trading him when his value is lowest. |

Well, no he wouldn't be at least for next season, but he's still signed through next season and I think there is an expected rise in the cap the following season, so what really changed then? If Briere (and possibly) Bryz get bought out, that could open things up to retain Read. Keep in mind my original post on this was in the context of trading Hartnell if that's what was needed to have room to keep Read. It's all premature anyway...we'll have to see how some of the coming changes will alter the cap outlook. - exlund
Alternatively, it's entirely plausible that Read is part of a trade to get defensive help. |

I'm not sure you can justify "overpaying" Read just because there would be some cap-space available from cutting fat from the payroll... in a pre-lockout $80m+ assumed cap-ceiling, you could probably get away with that a bit easier than you can now, with a lot of the pre-lockout contracts still on the books.
Then there's the matter of who do you get to replace all the production of the guys they got rid of... Briere and Hartnell have had off years, but they're still top-six forwards. I do think they'd gain some value/dollar by getting rid of Bryz and replacing him with a comparable vet, but not enough to cover Read's raise and address the problems on the blueline. |

To get a team to give up a top-5 pick in this draft, you'd have to package both of them and eat some of Hartnell's salary.
A Cole for Ryder type of deal is more along the lines of what's possible for Hartnell.
There's more options when it comes to Read, of course. |

Total side note:
At the NYR game and the Devils game, the Flyers observed moments of silence for the events in Boston. Both times, there were a few jackasses who thought it was "cool" or "edgy" to shout or yell during them. I was honestly ashamed to be associates with them as Flyers fans, and I really hope no one's funny enough to do so tonight. |

If someone is offering a top-5 pick for either player, I'm taking it.
Alas, Mike Milbury is no longer employed by an NHL organization. |

Yep, 3 straight loses gaurentees 9th pick, but probably higher. Winning does nothing for them at this point. - jstross
id like to see them at least be able to get nurse. |

I think most projections show the cap moving up appreciably in the years after next. While there is likely to be some contraction of salaries (for new contracts) this off season, I don't think we are going to see a long lasting regression, thus I don't see a player like Read (assuming his level of play is same or better) reverting to a fair value of less than 3 million in UFA when his contract is up. Maybe the Flyers can manage to lock him up during next season when there could be a (perceived) dip in player values. I wouldn't count on it though. Either way, barring unforseen regression, Read is probably going to garner a salary in that 3-4 mil range, and I don't see that as a big overpay...will the Flyers be the ones paying him that? We'll just have to see how things unfold.
Regarding the production, we're going to see some new faces (Laughton, McGinn, ??) coming in and pushing some of the other young players (Coots, Schenn etc.) into larger roles. I think Simmer can play a similar role as Hartnell and Coots and Schenn have a lot more to give than they have thus far...if Briere and Bryz are bought out, that leaves room for another acquisition...again, this is a bit premature, but I think there are ways to do it if they want to go in that direction. |

Just as well, really.
It's not like Kimmo needs to win a job for next year or anything and it gives some of the younger guys a bit of an extended look.
Actually, when Timonen is not working out this summer, I'd appreciate it if the Flyers' training staff (or wherever he spends his summers) could put Timonen in bubble wrap or something so he's ready for the start of next year. |

Can't wait til seravalli finds a way to tie the injury to Bryz falling asleep at practice. |
