Of course you are wrong about that. Ottawa offered Chara the same contract deal they gave Redden, as they wanted to retain both players. Chara, however wanted mare and demanded to be appointed Captain of the team on top of that.
As Ottawa was not about to strip the Captaincy away from Alfredsson, they resubmitted their offer and never heard back fro Chara or his agent.
At one second past midnight, the exact second he became an UFA, he signed with Boston.
Ottawa did not choose between the two (Chara & Redden), at let Chara go............he wanted out, and made such a ridiculous demand, that he knew the team would not agree too.
One of the reasons Chara wanted out, was that when Hossa forced the team into the position that they had to trade him (for Heatley) he knew that his future would not be in Ottawa unless he keep his contract demands within the teams Budget. - Doppleganger
Lots of theories out there, here is one from the mouth of the GM, I havent seen any mention of the Captain thing.
http://www.senschirp.ca/b...1-revisiting-chara/redden
"The salary cap is really tough. You've got some tough decisions as a general manager when you're going to have to let some very good hockey players go, like the Chara situation. I had Redden and Chara's contracts expiring the same year...I started negotiations with both of them with the idea of taking the first one who agreed to terms, whoever he was. What I really wanted to do is to sign both of them at the same price, which I was unable to do. Chara would not give us a number. so he walked. Everybody thought that we wanted to do this or that we picked Redden over him. That wasn't the case, it wasn't the case at all." -John Muckler
Mucklers words "He walked"
Point was most teams have GM that made some bad decisions like the leafs trading Rask (who apparently they didnt want to give), but Boston wanted

I gotta say as a Leaf fan, this weekend has been sweet. Chiarelli ripping Seguin and rumours of them already wanting to trade him is a lot of fun.

As much fun as making the playoffs once in the past decade and pissing away game 7 in the process?
When was your last playoff win? Did you even have pubes at the time? |

I love how, "teams calling Boston about Seguin" ... magically becomes Boston "wanting to trade him".
Funny thing is, Leafs have the guy Boston really wanted to trade. |

Sorry I'm missing the part where he says "and we're trying to get him out of town".
Ironically your schadenfreude laden chest thumping is over a guy who the B's actually did shop for 2+ years and was notorious for being a back of Richards and extremely uncommitted.
"Hey Phil, the gym is that way"
"Heh ... yeah" *leaves rink*
If you believe the rumour mill, which you apparently do, Phil was nearly traded for a 40 year old, Keith Tkachuk. Let that sink in for a minute |

Never heard that rumour once.
And it's funny how that gym story is supposed to mean so much yet the Seguin story doesn't.
Does Phil need to work-out more? 4th highest NHL scorer the last two years with Tyler Bozak as his centre. Let that sink in. Oh my god he's so fat and slow! |

According to sources around the team, Seguin was out late in Toronto during the road trip to play the Leafs in the first round of the playoffs and the team had to hold a sit-down with the immature forward about his commitment to the team. Seguin showed up each day at the Air Canada Centre wearing the same clothes for three straight days and played badly in Games 3 and 4 of the first round against Toronto. |

Yeah.....I represent the Bruins. They love my opinion.
Is that how you wanna make yourself feel better after running your mouth in here and not having a pot to piss in because Toronto blows?

Gotta love Boston fans being upset over Leaf fans enjoying this. We've been beaten to death by our media and 29 other fanbases over the "Worst Trade Ever"! for 4 years. How dare we take our shots at this situation now.
You guys can dish it out but can't take it.

And now he can wear an OHL looking jersey in Dallas while we get a 2way sniper who is willing to waive a NTC to come to our team, plus, there are 2 prospects that are NHL ready-and one projected as a 25 goal scorer.
I'm very happy with the deal |

FWIW I still take Eriksson, Morrow, Fraser, Smith, Hamilton and Knight over Kessel 100 times out of 10 |

Sure because every prospect is a franchise player, right? How many Norris trophies will Hamilton win again?
4 years after the trade, the Leafs got easily the best player in the deal. |

Best offensive player, sure I'll give you that. I'd still rather have the haul listed than PhiL. Bruins are a better team with Phil gone than they were with him, all that matters to me. And Seguin can go put up 100 points a year in Dallas and if Loui gets 65 and the B's continue to be successful while having stocked the cupboards, I'll be over the moon on both deals.
