I've debated wearing a paper bag over my head at the game tonight, but I have too much pride and love for my team to follow through with it.
A few years back I had a nice chat with Danny after the pre-game skate, near the tunnel. Class act, chatted with us random fans, signed autographs for kids, etc. Sad that this is likely his last game as a Flyer, but necessary to move the club forward.
Knuble, Feds, Boucher, Shelley, Walker, Lilja, Foster... see ya.
Hoping Gagne takes the discount to re-sign for next season. - Rocktane
Gags has already come out and pretty much said he'd take a discount. Its just up to the flyers not to push their luck.

Leier has done well from what I've watched. Haven't watched much of Straka. |

Continuing the conversation from the last thread, BSH did a pretty neat analysis of the trade value of draft picks in terms picks they've been traded for.
So, by their measure, the guy was saying that Coburn is only worth a 3rd-round draft pick. Which is either really depressing or completely off-base. - Tomahawk
I don't see anywhere in this article where it tells the values of players relative to the value of the draft picks. Am I just missing something here? |

If I were the Flyers, I would take Pulock or Ristolainen ahead of Nurse if all three were on the board. That doesn't mean Nurse can't end up being the best of the three but I think he requires the biggest leap of faith and the most patience until he is about 23 or 24 years old.
Nurse succeeds in the OHL because he's a great athlete and is physically a man against boys -- and will only fill out in years to come -- despite having only turned 18 in February. However, I've seen him play enough this year to have some concerns about how much patience it will take at the NHL level to get him through his learning curve years. You might see his massive potential turn into being a bonafide star. There are mixed reviews from scouts on whether he could be a point producer in the NHL (stats this year aside) and he's a guy who really could go either way and become either a two-way standout or a little nastier version of Coburn (i.e., a big guy who can skate well and tends be defensively streaky with modest offense).
Far and away, Pulock has the highest pure offensive upside of the three. I don't even think he's all that bad defensively. He can use his size better and get more consistent away from the puck but the tools and there.
Ristolainen, whom I have only seen play at the WJC and in game highlights (it's is all but impossible to find SM-liiga streams but daily free highlights are available within an hour of a game ending) but have talked to a Finnish-based NHL scout about, is the safest pick of the three. He'll be a good puck-mover in the NHL and be decent defensively (although not a shutdown guy against the opponent's top line). He plays with an occasional edge. He's probably not going to be a top-pairing player unless his offensive skills further develop into being a point-producer.
I know for a fact, because Mikael Renberg said it on TV during the WJC, that the Flyers have scouted and like Swedish defenseman Robert Hägg (the Philly scouts solicited Renberg's own opinions on him). He's probably going to get picked sooner than his projected mid-to-late 20s range, but would be an off-the-board hunch if he went around where the Flyers will pick. He's been compared to Kenny Jönsson and Kim Johnsson and I can absolutely see him developing along those lines.

So what you're saying is we really need to win the lottery and grab Jones!
All kidding aside, I just want them to take the best player on the board regardless of position. I would be thrilled with a player like Barkov or Monahan and would take either of them over any of the defensemen not named Seth Jones. |

And you also have to remember that once, a long, long time ago, Coburn was an 8th overall as we believe Nurse will be (around). Nurse could be great, but he could just end up being another Coburn. Things like this can go either way. |

Has been opinion as well obviously not as in depth regarding Nurse but to me seems like he needs a lot of work. I would much rather have an NHL ready player this year would be great if not then next season hopefully.

good stuff, bill. thanks. the stuff about hagg is really interesting. you think homer considers trading back (...maybe with columbus??) an option? if the draft really is a deep one and the flyers are high on this kid, might not be a bad idea
would be a better one if columbus wasn't coming to the division next year |

if it's the rags who play pittsburgh i'm rooting for the jumbotron to fall. - Don'tForgetTocchet
I cheer for the Rags, then develop a new, more complex system if they win: cheer for whatever team plays the Rangers. Devious. Unless it's the Bruins, then I've got serious problems. |

say columbus offers 18 and 24 for 8 (hypothetical, of course)... are people interested? does it depend on what players are available? |
