while you made a reasonable point about holmstrom, i just don't get how bringing back a 650k pk, faceoff guy w/ a physical edge, is any great risk. you could lose him during training camp w/ no prob. 55% at the dot is hard to find...just don't get it...must be something we can't see. - isaiah520
I would prefer to wait to see if he recovers from ACL reconstruction. In the mean time you need to prepare as if he does not.

but how will they get Gio?
He seems like part of the core for the Flames. - Marc D
Mr. Stupidity Hartnell comes into play there.
Not in a straight up deal, I think the Flyers could get a little more coming back. |

I'd do that, although I really do not think Flyers would get more back.
Defenseman in trades are at a premium.
The salary is pretty close, but Hartnell is signed for more years. |

It's a new offseason, and Homer was doing the right thing at the time. Not going for at least Suter and Parise, and right now we'd be saying how incompetent he was for not taking a shot in that direction. Hindsight is 20/20. He's learned important lessons from this whole ordeal, and now he knows to not go after a deal so intensely with no backup plan that if the deal doesn't go he's dug himself into a deep hole. - JAKEw1234
Not buying it. The reason we lost out on these marquee players is because every long term contract Homer signs gets traded the next year. Carter, Richards, JVR. Who is next...Giroux? People don't trust him and that's why we lost out on those deals. |

In terms of player management Lava failed big time. In many, many ways.
That would be my reason for any sort of firing. Regarding systems, there is nothing wrong with an attacking system. He waited too long to calm it down though. Having 3 guys in deep with the other team able to make a quick chip play, lead to many goals against. - flyer_nutter
I think Lavi is going to be around next year. The team didn't quit and played better down the stretch. |

Agreed. Sam Carkeedee told me that when polled, NHL players and coaches named Homer the least trustworthy GM out there, barely beating out Gary Bettman. |

Just in that one article:
"As for the Flyers’ perceived lack of mobility and toughness on the blue line, Holmgren cast injuries to Andrej Meszaros and Braydon Coburn as being intrinsic in that equation. Yet he said last week that he sees a shift in the league toward a more defensive style of play, one that doesn’t seem to mesh with the system taught by head coach Peter Laviolette. "
Cant take everything at face value but I dont want them bringing in some new coach and going to some complete defensive scheme.

I think Parise and Suter were weird cases because they really wanted to go back to Minny anyway.
Not going to go as far to say that no FA will consider Philadelphia at all, but I do think it might cross a player's mind, after the long contracts handed out to Carter, Richards and JVR. It would cross mine.
I'd say the bigger issue is Holmgren throwing out big deals and NTCs, far too easily after a player has a few good seasons of promise. |

It's not a risk so much as there's no need to rush to sign him... there will be plenty of Adam Halls and Blair Betts looking for work in August/September. |

Thats ridiculous! We lost on Parise/Suter cause they wanted to go home and we lost on Weber cause Nashville matched.
Hartnell and Timonen just came off 6 year deals and were re-signed and Briere just finished year 6 of an 8 year deal; by your logic all 3 would have been traded in 2008!
There are enough legitmate reasons to criticize Homer: failure to have a backup goalie in place or anyone other than Giroux that can win a faceoff at the start of the season to name a few. No need to create reasons that don't exist. The Carter, Richards and JVR trades were hockey deals, they werent moved just to get rid of them. |

Help settle an argument for me:
I was told that Simmonds season was an aberration and that this season he reverted back to his "mean" season. He told me that unless he scored 29 goals, his total of 28 is an aberration.
I argued that he was on pace for 26 goals and a career high in assists and points. So that could hardly be called reverting. I said Brady Anderson hitting 50, or Cheechoo scoring 50 is an aberration. Not scoring 26 after a season of 28.
What you all think? He refused to accept my point, told me my stats did not support my argument that Simmonds did not regress.

i think simmonds has crossed the rubicon and become a reliable 20-25 goal scorer...as long as he gets PP time. |

The core of this team has all the makings of a SC winning team, but they're young and they have to go through some ups and downs.
For a second there, I thought Laviolette lost the team this year. But they looked really good down the stretch with basically an AHL defensive core. I think the players trust Lavy, and like him a lot. Scott Hartnell's play since Lavy's arrival just proves that.

Thomas would have been, until the Islanders decided they wanted to add a $4M cap hit. There is no precedent, but then again, there aren't many goalies who have ever had a deal that long for that much money. Also, due to the new terms of the CBA, there's never been a possibility for an $8M dead cap space penalty before.
No one's saying it will happen, but it's a scary possibility. - jmatchett383

His point was that if Simmonds doesn't surpass 28 goals, that 28 goal season is an aberration (his words). This was said in the context that only Voracek improved as a player this season.
I said, well Simmonds maintained his scoring pace from last season and was on pace for a career high in assists and points. So I think he improved. He said no, Simmonds reverted back to his mean season totals. I said, not true.
This went on and on and on.

Fck Tim Thomas, he better never be a Flyer.
Ryan Miller I think would have a tough time being a goalie in Philly, but then again so would everyone. - Marc D
