No. They aren't moving him. The Defense in Boston is nothing if not aging. They'll need him to develop into a corner stone long term. I can't envision what it would take to pry him loose but nothing reasonable. - mayorofangrytown
I can't argue with that. Any way to get him would be huge for philly, though. If Coots + 2 1st rounders + another pick is unreasonable, though, I'm willing to pay an unreasonable price Boston is deep down the middle, so it wouldn't be perfect for them, but it'd be oh so good for us.
funny chris pronger will be on the flyers roster until 2017, never play a game, and the flyers get cap relief by putting on injured reserve, and exactly how is this not circumventing the salary cap? - devfan30
It's a crime. The guy should be able to retire with dignity, get his money, and move on.

For a 5th overall pick (although be it was in the worst draft class in a long time) he is. I expect a 5th overall pick to be an All Star top-6 forward or top pair defenseman. Alzner is a solid 3/4, but he hasn't come close to replicating his junir numbers in the NHL (see; Schenn, Luke, a good top-4 player who hasn't met all of his expectations, at least yet). - jmatchett383
It was pretty much acknowledged at draft-time that his offense would be limited... there's really no stink of underachievement with him.
He handles the toughest defensive assignments, is a top penalty killer, gets no PP time, and starts the majority of his shifts in his own zone.

I'm not willing to go that far. If they take a defenseman this year in the first round he'll be just two years behind Hamilton in development and could be just as good or better. Losing three picks and Couturier is a heavy hit. You're paying three firsts plus for a still developing player. I think he's going to be great but have you seen him play this season. He's not exactly setting the world on fire.

I couldn't agree with this more. They addressed the long term back diving contracts that necessitated in their minds the over 50 contract clause. Why not let that go and give these guys closure?

Okay. I have to admit, I haven't watched many Washington games, I just know that he was a high pick and hasn't put up the same offense as he did in juniors. But if that's a case of the team putting him in a certain position, that's fine. Just a thought.

The pieces may make sense in terms of general value - four assets for one sounds pretty hard to pass up -- but GM's aren't dealing in a vacuum.

I understand he's future elite. As in he's Pietrangelo in 3 seasons. Hockeysfuture.com actually had Pietrangelo pegged at 8.5 (halfway between no.2 defenseman and elite defenseman), and they have Hamilton at 9.0. Of course, they aren't right about everything; Giroux was an 8.5 (halfway between 1st line forward and elite forward). But Couturier and Schenn are both 8.5s, according to these guys, and these guys really do their homework on players. So let's say they are only marginally incorrect (within 0.5) about Hamilton, as they were with Pietrangelo and Giroux. That would still make him equal to or slightly better than Pietrangelo when he's at that point. Now long term, Schenn and Couturier both don't have a spot on this team, unless Schenn goes to the wing. I think paying Couturier plus 2 first rounders plus maybe a 2nd or 3rd is an awesome price to pay for someone like Hamilton.

Retiring on his own terms is a plus, but I'm sure Pronger also would like to continue to enjoy a lot of the team and union benefits that are afforded to him as an active player, namely Snider covering all of his medical costs. Plus, getting his contract paid in full isn't so bad, either.

What's wrong with the 3 center approach? Worked okay for Pittsburgh in 2009.

I disagree. Alzner plays a lot of the tough minutes for that team. Matches up against top lines, plays a lot of tough PK minutes along with Carlson. He doesn't need to replicate his Junior numbers. There is more to the game then scoring. Preventing goals is just as important. There is two sides to the puck.

How is it cap circumvention exactly? He has a legitimate injury.

Technically there are 3 sides to a puck, 2 flats and one round.

Has to do with the 50/50 share, and money outside the system. Pronger can retire any time he wants to. if he wants to give up that money.

Let's just say Alzner is what Ryan Parent should have been.

The two sides I'm referring to in a common Hockey metaphor is the offensive and defensive side. A lot of fans only consider the offensive side, and scoring goals.
