I would if we didn't already have 2 similar forwards like him. Already having those 2 long term I don't see it as a primary need right now. - ob18
Agreed. I dont think we need to mess with the top 6 all that much. And if we do, it's not for a Clarkson type. More of a sniper/playmaker is who I would target. |

Might as well play the entire game 4 on 5 if he and Hartnell are top 6 on same team |

love him - Don'tForgetTocchet
Many people have said this but im just going to reiterate. He is one of those players you love when they are on your team but hate when you play against them. Personally I would like him on the flyers IF we didnt have power forwards like Simmonds and Hartnell already.
That said I dont want him to resign with the Devils. Hopefully he will go out west so we barely have to see him |

A new GM wouldn't hurt us if they bring the draft & develop approach which Homer & the Flyers don't seem to grasp the concept of too well. - ob18
We're doing alright without it imo. We developed G, we're developing coots, at this point we will hopefully be drafting a future potent force on defense. We drafted and developed Richards and Carter, then traded them and multiplied the trade value on this team. We'll be ok. As someone correctly said, Homer realizes what this team needs more than anyone else. He knows we need a #1 dman, he acquired Pronger when we needed one, and it will be only a matter of time until we get another one. |

Did you see Gardiner play last night.
Good on offense.
Atrocious on defence. - strongsupporter
Luckily we can work on that. He's no Jamie McBain, so that's the good news. Does anyone know why he was so bad on D? |

Right at the cap ceiling without using Pronger's LTIR money. UFA's add Stalberg and Rosival. Trade Mez for a 2nd rounder and buyout Briere and still room for another substantial UFA. - Just5
Why on Earth would you piss away a CBO on Meszaros with one year left on his deal? |

We could of got are Sidney Crosby if we won the lottery. Patrick Kane is a stud, it's sad that due to a stupid lottery system, the Flyers got screwed, and Chicago won a Cup. Kane is a stud |

Because he's never been good in his own end. You dismiss McBain, yet trumpet a similar player in Gardiner. Its like saying Danny Briere sucks on defense, let's trade for Derek Roy |

Someone's got to be the unlucky ones. Florida got screwed this season, it happens. JVR is a stud to, and now arguably our best defender has come out of the whole situation. We'll be ok. |

Florida's heart isn't exactly broken when they have the choice of MacKinnon or Drouin. Let's not shed a tear for them at all, |

Exactly. It's just that extolling Gardiner as this fantastic player while shredding a similar one in McBain seems, I don't know, kinda dumb |

Gardiner was proficient in his own end last year, being only 21, scoring 30 points, and having only a -2 in 75 games played. He's had a sophomore slump, but has shown an ability to play proficiently defensively. Mcbain, imo, has never shown an ability to play even decent defense, in 3 NHL seasons. Mcbain was a -8 with 30 points as a rookie, then -7 with 27 points the next year, then in this shortened season, by some miracle, in arguably his worst defensive year, was a + 0, but was on pace to score only 16 points this season. Gardiner has shown he cant be proficient defensively, McBain has not. |

Ha well in hindsight a choice between JVR and Patrick Kane is alittle more weighted. It's worked out fine for us, is all I'm saying. |

Right I was saying originally that it's worked out well for us in the end. I think I'd almost rather have Voracek then Kane... Ok that's a lie but I'm still very happy with Voracek, and I'm very happy with having Luke Schenn, who's the current incarnation of that 2nd overall pick on this team. |

Using +/- as the lone criteria to determine a player's defensive ability is kind of like deciding on a new car because it's red.
Edit: Looking into it further, Gardiner was one of the least defensively tasked defensemen in the East last year. He had more offensive zone starts, faced a lower quality of competition and kind of damningly, had more than half his zone ends in his own end which means he started often in the other team's zone and ended the shift in his own end. |
