If you want what's best for the team, then Bryzgalov playing well and backstopping the team to success, would be a potential option you would consider. But I've yet to read you state anything other then hoping for a buyout. Cap recapture is a long way off. - MJL
and your solution is equally entrenched and no more flexible...as if having the flexible position was always the goal. flexibility for the team is having cap space and not feeling trapped in a obviously bad, deal hoping we can learn to play like PHO to salvage it.
like i said many times, I'm willing to go another yr if the alternatives are not appealing, but theres no way this goes past nxt yr. and since this is an opinion site, mine is that he really doesn't want to come back. |

If Mason ends up working out (not implying he will) it wont even matter, Stolarz will be late 20s by the time Mason is around Bryz age. |

Really? I'm open to a buyout if it is in the best interests of the team. I'm open and receptive to giving Bryzgalov a chance and not rooting against him hoping for a buy out. I'm open to the possibility of Bryzgalov returning to the Vezina caliber level of play that he has played to in the past. I'm open to the fact that if he return to that level of play, then it's not an obviously bad deal.
Your telling me I'm not more flexible then you are as you're stating that there's not way this goes past next year? You've given zero credence to Bryzgalov raising his level of play, if the team game can be improved. But I'm not more flexible in my opinion? LOL
You have no evidence that he doesn't want to come back. All you have is you're own bias. And your hope that he doesn't come back, that is apparent in every post you make on the player.

For a 30 year old Pronger, I would rather have Pronger signed to a longterm deal. For a 36 year old Pronger, I would rather have had youth.
You have to look at all the pieces as well. Holmgren traded all those draft picks and lupul for a single year of Pronger. He had no prior talks with Pronger about an extension. It was an insanely risky trade. If Pronger had wanted to, he could've walked away after 1 year with a clear conscience. There was no GM in the league who would've done that trade except Holmgren. While we have no direct evidence, he most likely ended up bidding against himself as he has been prone to do. If he wants a guy he'll bid to the moon if he has to until the player or team says yes. Longterm consequences be damned.
That led to Holmgren to throwing bucketfuls of money and length of contract to get Pronger to get him to sign an extension. Pronger was totally in the drivers seat. If Pronger had left after one year Holmgren would've not been far behind and the team would be, well where we are no essentially except for the LTIR cap space, yet another boneheaded move that will be hanging over the Flyers heads for many years since they signed Pronger until age 42.
Holmgren overpaid for an aging Pronger on both ends of the deal, in compensation to the team and compensation to the player. People will say they came close with Pronger so it was worth it. The Flyers came close with Leighton in goal that year as well and have been hanging on to him ever since as well. They came close with Carter and Richards and they are long gone. There
You can't always swing for the fences every year. The Flyers lone saving grace is that they've been willing to buy themselves out of their mistakes. The cap makes it much harder but the Flyers willingness to throw money at any and every problem is not in question. Their lack of patience from year to year is similarly not in question.
In the grand scheme of things, with Pronger, Holmgren went all in and lost. |

I couldn't disagree more with this. It's all Monday morning Quarterbacking. Adding Pronger made the Flyers a legitimate Cup contender. You cannot offer any credible evidence to back up the statement that Holmgren was the only GM who would make that deal.
Holmgren did not trade the draft picks and players for a single year of Pronger. He traded them to have Pronger for the rest of his career. Nobody can predict a stick to the eye, and a career ending injury. And that is beyond Holmgren's control. And that is an injury that had zero to do with Pronger's age. If that didn't happen, he's likely still playing today at a high level.
Holmgren added a game changing player to the team. Every GM would make that deal if they felt that player was a player that elevates the team to a true Cup contender. Holmgren has the balls to make the moves that he feels are the right ones. That's what makes him a very good GM. And I hope if the opportunity arises again, and a similar move is available. I hope he makes it. And I have full confidence that he will.
