so really it's not a phrase that anyone would ever use

how did it become a commonly used expression that people use to mean something else?

this is the part that fascinates me

- Don'tForgetTocchet

Properly used, you'd only really say it to call somebody else out. In practice, people use this phrase (incorrectly) to mean 'raises the question'. I think it got popular because people want to sound smart (see: pseudointellectual, BulliesPhan87)

These days, the most common usage is incorrect. The one I most often hear is something along the lines of "This begs the question, how did he ever get into that situation in the first place?" or "This begs the question, how is that even possible?". Those are not the correct usage, but it is probably the way I hear/see it used most often.

I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone use it correctly in a sentence. It's not really the kind of thing anyone would use in normal conversation. It's more of a label for a particular type of circular logic error than it is something you would use in conversation.

i have read these things over and over and have still not gotten anyone to use it in a sentence. other than

"that is begging the question"

why is it an expression, but no one can use it in a sentence

- Don'tForgetTocchet

You would have to go over and sit in on a Parliament debate in England. I think they use this phrase correctly over there.

I keep reading about teams that need big body defensive Defenseman and have too many puck mover types.

Flyers should get together with them and make a trade.

Montreal was the latest.

Not sure about who to trade, but like Bill said, they likely need to re arrange the guys at the number 3-4-5 spots.

So one of Grossmann/Mez/Coburn I guess.

Kimmo and Luke Schenn I don't see going anywhere.

Well, I suppose Kimmo could be a rental at the trading deadline if they are foundering again next season, heaven forbid.

Flyers will trade
Sean Couturier
player selected with the 2013th 11th overall
2014 1st
2015 1st
Cash
for
Shea Weber

- Winning

If we gave that much, I'd really rather it be for a young Dman. Not unproven, but young. Age 24 at the latest. We would get half a decade to a decade more production out of them than a 28 year old Weber.

Raphel Diaz. Before Subban came back Diaz was #1 PP unit and racked up quite a few points. Once Subban got back he was bumped down to #2 PP unit but played pretty well after. Ended up with 1 goal and 14 assists while averaging over 20 minutes and was a plus 4.

For the record, he had 7 assists in the 5 games Subban didn't play in. So it may have been a hot start due to increase in opportunity, but the talent level is there.

So if I were having a conversation about Bryz .899 SV % and his astronomical GAA, and I proclaimed "Which begs the question, is the indicative of his play or the teams play, I would be incorrect? Because to me that is how I would use it. Meaning some fact/conversation/what-have-you brings about another question, thus literally begging the question to complete the conversation.

That would be incorrect. If you said "which raises the question..." that would be fine. "Begging the question" refers to a specific type of logic error when a person attempts to prove his/her point by restating the point, not proving it. For example, saying "I think Bryz sucks because he is a bad goalie" begs the question. Saying he sucks and saying he's a bad goalie are the same thing. One does not prove the other.

That's how most use the phrase, but that is not traditionally what 'begging the question' means. Begging the question would be more akin to saying, "In regards to whether the team defense is causing the goalie to play poorly or vice versa, that the goalie is the catalyst, because his numbers say he is playing poorly."

bryz sucks because he ducks and is therefore a bad goalie. or something like that. the could be something a hater MIGHT say, and they are proving their point with a specific example as to why he sucks. in this case, he or she would NOT be begging the question.
