You are 100% right.
You will not get better next season. You may have some trouble.
The organization has to be able to accept a bit of a rebuild on that defense. It seems all the hoopla is whether the team keeps Coburn.
Or trades him and gives a chance to Oliver now. I'd prefer the second. - flyer_nutter
Or they could try the radical idea of actually using guys in a manner that emphasizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses and not trying to ask guys to do things that they can't do.
I'd rather they do that than rush youngsters that might not be ready and then have to compound their mistake.

Why does he need more ahl time?
Unless they ask him to work on certain things. He is perfectly capable of playing the same game - Just5
Do you think that Laviolette will continue to use the simplified system he employed after the rash of injuries? Because I don't. I fully expect him to revert to his old style. |

Because he's not ready for a full time NHL role. There are areas of his game he needs to improve on. Such as his positional play. - MJL
I think positionally he was doing much better at the end of his stint. The NHL game is different and I think he handled the speed well. If he goes down I don't think great improvement will be realized. I think he can work on carrying the puck in certain situations, calming the play down. If they send him down I'd hope he has marching orders to work on that |

I'm a little more leaning toward that Oliver would benefit more from the on ice mentorship with Timonen, and a year in the big league now, instead of sending him to the AHL.
Edit: Pittsburgh up against Ottawa in round two. Should be a damn good series, but Ottawa is going through the blender so far in these playoffs. |

I lean a bit toward blaming Holmgren, and scouting myself.

The AHL is the number one developmental league for the NHL. To say that improvement won't be made, ignores the level of improvement that he's already made playing in the AHL. He's gone from a player that was considered an AHL defenseman, into the NHL picture in the future. Lauridsen needs to work on his anticipation of plays, and his positioning. And his puck handling. He had far too many turnovers for a 3rd pair defensive defenseman who plays low minutes. These are all areas he needs to improve on to be an NHL regular. That can be done in the AHL. |

It would depend how he's used and what style of play the team is using. If they're using the same system the used at the beginning of the year, then he'd likely struggle.
I'm not completely writing him off, either. I'm just hedging my bets by keeping vets that can be solid if used properly. I'd give him every opportunity to win a job, but I'd also monitor his minutes closely. |

I think that's part of a reason to send him down to work on his puck handling skills. For someone who isn't particularly a puck moving defenseman, he had an awful lot of turnovers in his stint up in the big league. |

I think it would largely depend on who he plays with.
If you have him with Guss that will be trouble. Having him with a bit more of a mobile guy, who will be the one expected to transition play up ice is the best option.

Absolutely. He also doesn't skate real well, so he needs to be really solid in his positional play. |

Sounds about right. I just firmly a believe a trade is going to happen. Homer went after Suter and Weber last season. I can't believe he looks at his d core now and is satisfied. I just hope Coots isn't part of any trade. If they can keep G, Voracek, and Coots, as far as I'm concerned everyone else can be discussed to upgrade the blueline. |

I absolutely agree with this, though the last line i'm thinking you meant the AHL. trial by fire is not going to help most dmen...esp low skill level guys that have to play w/in themselves. better to keep them longer than needed than not as long as we should have.
edit: yeah, you corrected that. |

I feel Laviolette is the most to blame, because he used the pieces he had in a manner that exposed their weaknesses, rather than sheltered them.
You can't expect the Dancing Bears to master the Trapeze in the space of a couple weeks. That's what he did. He expected Coburn to be something he's not. Meszaros was hurt. The forwards did a poor job in not only giving the defensemen passing options, but also in backchecking and playing two way hockey.
After the injuries to Coburn and Grossmann and the last one to Meszaros, the Flyers changed their style noticeably. The forwards were tasked to play a much more responsible two way game, and the gap between defense and forwards was reduced, which limited the high risk passes and turnovers.
Had they used the simplified, more responsible system from the start, I think they make the playoffs. |

For sure, for sure.
Even with some of my doubts on Brayden Schenn long term, I would rather keep the youth up front, and be willing to part with a guy like Hartnell. |

Grossmann was one of the few guys that Laviolette used perfectly last year. He gave him a job that fit his capabilities and didn't ask him to change his game and do things he couldn't do.
Unfortunately, that's not the case for Coburn. |

100% agree but I also will give credit to Gus and Oliver b/c they still did a nice job when they could of failed even with the change. |
