I was just coming in here to mention Edler. Before he signed his new extension, he was my #1 target. Now that Vancouver needs to overhaul their roster a bit, maybe he's available for the right price.
A Canucks fan suggested a Simmonds for Edler trade. I love Wayne Train, but if we're looking for a long-term #1 d-man, you have to give to get. This allows us to retain Schenn x2, Coots, and Read. Probably won't happen, as Homer says we need to get "bigger up front", so this would be a 180 move.
Thoughts on this fan offer, and your guys offers to acquire Edler? - Rocktane
I'd drive Wayne out to Vancouver myself |

Im a bit concerned about all the criticism elder seemed to take this spring for his lack of sticking up for teammates, disinterest play etc - Just5
i think that whole team kinda had a dead men walking vibe around them. gillis did them no favors and i think their run w/ that core is dubious. they need a re-boot. i'd be very interested in edler. |

dont think train would get it done w/o high pick and a gusty at least coming back. |

Always liked Gustafsson and believed he would be a good defenseman if given the opportunity. - stveshdy
I have always felt he could be a solid third pair guy in the NHL, but he's been Sweden's top guy so far, and done well in the role. If he can be a top 4 guy it'd be a nice coup for Holmgren and the Flyers. |

don't know if he can hold up, but the fact that he's showing that potential is a real plus. |

It would be nice for sure, but the Flyers still have to get more than a "wish on a star" plan for the retirement of Timonen.
I'd be cool if they give Guss and Oliver full time roles next season. However I dont like the idea of standing pat with that blueline and just rolling the dice again.
A move does have to be made imo, yet I hope they keep Grossman. He was a monster, and most nights the best d-man on this team since his arrival. People forget that fast it seems. |

The real issue that is developing here for me is that it seems the Flyers have two young D that probably deserve a shot to make the lineup, and for once can hopefully provide the Flyers with some decent play, for a low price.
Timonen and Schenn are locks but after that you have some real decisions to make.
To me, after that 1st pairing, you cannot carry 3 highly paid d-men who do have pretty big question marks in their game. Grossman and Meszaros with health, and Coburn with consistency.
If the Flyers do end up giving Oliver and Guss a real shot to stick with the big club, I want those roles to be pretty damn close to permanent. Having either guy play that 7th d-man role, and not getting in the game with any real regularity/consistent d partner, is a sure was to stunt any sort of growth imo. |

To replace Timonen after next season, they will have to trade or sign a free agent. There is no other way possible. Even if they manage to trade up to number one and get Jones, he can not replace Timonen next year. |

Injuries are the biggest concern as to his being able to be a full time NHLer, but I'm wondering if he can be more than a 5th or 6th defenseman, moreso than his injury avoidance |

If somehow the Flyers could get a lineup of:
Edler/Giordano-Schenn
Timonen-Oliver
Guss-Grossman
cheap veteran 7th d-man signing
I would be pretty cool with that lineup, that I think is much more financially appropriate in the salary cap era. Isn't so stacked with highly paid players best suited to secondary roles. |

I do think they will try one more hard run at Weber when the opportunity arises again.
Other than that, there rarely is a real replacement for a #1 d-man, or even a guy that is on the decline like Kimmo.
These next few years, will really set the course for the organization. |

I believe a majority of any potential succession plan for life after Kimmo was for Coburn to take the next step up and fulfill some of the offensive promise that he showed earlier in his career. Can he get to that point again? That is the question I cannot answer. His inconsistency is maddening. When he is good, he is borderline All-Star, When he is bad, yikes.
With the apparent emergence of Gus, Coburn is the great mystery for the blue line. Do they ride him next year and hope he takes that next step to be a 22 minute d-man who can chip in 30 pts a season. Or replace him with something else.
If they could rely on Coburn to be a pillar on the blueline instead of a question mark the whole unit looks completely different. |

I somehow feel Edler could be had for less than what Phoenix wants for Yandle, and I consider him a lot better overall. |

As much as I really want that big bird out of here, I would be alright with a return. I do think its time to tone down those expectations though. His career has been chronically inconsistent, which I hate for a guy with that salary, and in turn what the team will ask from him.
If Coburn returns, I'd really like it to be on a limited shutdown role. Its frustrating as hell, because you cant really have a d-man that is being paid over 4 million play like absolute horsepoop in the games when it most counts.
With Coburn, you never know how he will play a given night, thats why I would be ready to move on. There may not be an immediate replacement, but I would even be alright if Oliver or Guss at least got that chance.
As far as Im concerned, you cannot have a guy like Coburn, who will be slotted into important minutes, partly due to his cap hit play like horsepoop whenever he chooses to.
That will kill you in the playoffs.

See my thing for a few seasons has been that the Flyers have one of the most expensive defensive cores in the league.
In terms of money vs performance on ice? Do they live up to it?
Its part of where having young d-men who can provide you with decent play, for a cheap price really comes in. I'm more and more in favour of giving Guss and Oliver full time roles next season, and signing a cheap 7th veteran d-man.
The Flyers pay so much for the back end, and have for years, to get such inconsistent play. |
