He's not that bad, but he's failed to have a good playoff run, despite having two of the 5 best players in the world on his roster. He's made some fantastic trades on paper, that haven't been enough to push them over the top.
He's made a lot of big, bold moves that haven't gotten his team to the mountaintop.
His draft record isn't that great, with Jordan Staal being the lone player drafted under Shero to play more than 100 NHL games. In fact, in the last 5 years, the Penguins have drafted 3 players that have even seen a NHL shift-and one of those was Alexander Pechurski, who played 36 minutes in goal for the Pens in 2009-10 - Jsaquella

Why is Shero sooo much better GM than Homer ?
Even with Flower being horrid every single playoffs after they won the cup, Shero still is far better at asset management than Homer.. what gives ? - MrBigglesworth
In which way is Shero so much better at asset management?

In the same 5 year period, the Flyers have drafted 7 players who reached the NHL, with 2 of them playing over 100 NHL games(Couturier & Sbisa).
To be fair, the Pens have some highly rated picks that simply haven't reached the NHL yet(Derrick Pouliot, Olli Maatta, the since traded Joe Morrow), but over the width and breadth of Shero's run, he's been a subpar drafter. |

I was mostly being obnoxious, but this illustrates pretty well how over-rated Shero is. Having said two players, as well as a recognizable hockey name, has served him well. |

I'm not a big Holmgren fan and agree with the sentiment that he is bad at cap/asset management but it's a lot easier to GM if you get the 1st overall pick for a few years in a row. |

Shero is by far an inferior GM. To name a few:
Gifted Crosby and Malkin.
Took Jordan Staal over Jonathan Toews in the draft. (I understand the rationale for doing it, just wholeheartedly disagree with it)
Grossly overpaid for stiffs Douglas Murray and Brendan Morrow this past deadline. Overpaid for Iginla, too (relative to what the Bruins gave up for Jagr).
Overvalued and overpaid MAF.
To be fair, had some good moves though, too: the Pascal Dupuis/Hossa trade. Signing Vokoun. Building a strong defense. James Neal trade. - bradleyc4
I'm still amazed that deal was even offered. There were 28 other GMs who would have done that deal. Also, kinda crazy that Dupuis has become the centerpiece of the Hossa deal. |

Holmgren has done a good job as gm, he's not ken holland but hes certainly in the top 3rd of gms. |

Thats how speculative trades work though. Goligoski was supposed to be a letang like player and neal was a tough 20 goal power forward. Sometimes they work out sometimes they don't. |

If he can't rebound from a minor setback, then he was never going to be a stud.
Pelle Lindbergh was sent back to the AHL the season before he won the Vezina - Jsaquella
he even wore a horrible billy smith helmet/cage while doing it. surprised it didn't ruin him. |

I still think James Neal is a bit overrated (how hard is it to bang home 25 Malkin rebounds a season?), but you can't argue with the results. |

If even hockey fans know how bad Amaro is, why does he still have a job?
Atrocious. IMO, most positions in the real world are not filled by the most qualified people. Philly.com "journalists" barely write at a high school level. |

Well to be fair, you've never given us a Cloutier-like glimpse into your physical shortcomings and have yet to suggest a trade of Max Talbot for Henrik Lundqvist |

Watching the Ducks Red Wings game last night, it made me think the Flyers defense was no worse then those two teams. The Ducks had Ben Lovejoy on the point for their first PP unit. Those two have some pretty good goaltending and forwards, but the D was not that great.
It made me think the Flyers had a good enough team to make the play offs and I got mad at Lavi. Useless exercise in frustration.
That Emerson Etem looked very good in a losing cause, one of the best Ducks last night.
The crowd outside watching the big screen in Toronto looked like they had a blast yesterday. All they needed was some Pitbull action. |
