And why up the middle... Pee Wee teams don't clear up the middle.
- bixll

I think the Leafs were purposely trying to go up the middle because Boston is so tough along the boards? just a guess.

Haven't looked at any rankings lately.. but is there a chance mackinnon falls any further than third?
- dragus84

doubtful. Maybe 4th if Jones, Druin, Barkov go.

I really dont want to trade Gardiner. Of course its a long shot, nobody trades high picks anymore....but Toronto

Will it be hard to replace a Captain that has not a lot of heart and makes a ton of defensive mistakes. For what, 6 or 7 milly.
- bixll

He is one of those guys who you wonder about after the fact that maybe you should not have traded him.

I would not mind seeing him gone, but I would hope they could get a good return for him from a team desparate for D.

I think if phaneuf would be the best no 2 d in the league. The problem is good luck getting a hold of a true number 1

Yeah, useful piece for a year or two. I like the idea.

exactly what the leafs need.. solid, low risk d-man who can eat up lots of minutes against opposition top lines.

fits the bill perfectly.

also not a long term investment so he wouldnt get in the way of developing younger players.

Tough call. Two months ago I would have said yes, since the Leafs looked like they were fine without him. The last few games against Boston though he looked like he could be an elite PMD one day and he is still very young.

That is just a really tough call.

What about Couturier? Do we think he is any good? Would you give up Phaneuf for him? What about Phaneuf+ ... the Flyers could really use Phaneuf.

- Aetherial

Yeah those last few games Gardiner played has made it really tough for me to throw his name into trades.

I wouldnt move Phaneuf unless we already had the person to replace him, and I know he gets crapped on a lot, but I think we would be in bad shape without him.

Couturier would be great, I dont see him being moved.

For which he underwent tests when the Leafs were returning from one of their late season road-trips.

I didn't even hear an actual diagnosis, and you said he went through treatment.

Source?

it was something in his stomach i cant remember, and the treatment has been some antibiotics, nothing intense or special

I think the "Franchise potential" stops at pick 3. Not saying Gardiner is a franchise player but neither is anyone that we'd pick at 5. Jones,Mackinnon and Drouin will be the first three picks. I'd rather have Gardiner + say a Max Domi than Monohan or Barkov. IMO
- steve362

That was my next question. Is Gardiner + our pick at 19 better than Monahan or whoever.

I wish we could move a Grabo, Kulemin, Mac + our pick instead to move up...thats dreaming

I haven't followed this draft class much... but from what I hear, Barkov is in the mold of a Patrick Sharp type player. Max Domi is more in the mold of a Derek Roy. It's really hard to know what to do obviously because we don't know who will be picked where.

Add Bickell to the list of maybe's, a hard nose player that can win battles along the boards and can still chip in 25 plus points.

Awesome story!! None of it's true, but still entertaining nonetheless.

I'm assuming that the Montreal Gazette is something you might consider a reliable source of Habs related info.
