Actually, the big need for Vancouver is a physical winger. Simmonds would be a perfect fit for them and give them some cap savings in a deal that sends Edler out. - Jsaquella
Cant see it happening though. We would be tiny on the wing and holmer has stated he wants to get bigger. I know edler might change the equation but it opens up another hole. Clarkson is out of the question I think to much $.
Gus recent play has me thinking bigger minutes like 20-23 range for him consistently next year |

I'd say value-wise Read is equal to or greater than Simmonds, but I see your point that he would fit with them better. The idea of trading our youth core away for mid-aged player makes me cringe, though. I hope it could be done with Read, Cousins, and a 2nd rounder. |

Gustafsson has missed time with injuries in each of the last three years, plus, they're going to need a Timonen replacement by next year.
Simmonds is physical and strong, but he's not big. Also, it's trading from a position of depth to address a position of need. The Canucks don't need Matt Read. They have 3 of him.
As for size, among the potential UFAs will be Clarkson, Clowe, Horton & Zubrus...Clarkson is not the lone option. |

The Canucks don't need smaller, speedy forwards. They need guys who have grit in their games. Read isn't filling a need for them, despite being a very solid player. |

McGinn is a winger who is better served to be a top 6 winger. He really isn't an energy guy and probably not a fit for a checking line. He's a big bodied winger who does the dirty work along the boards and can stand in front of the net, like Simmonds. |

I believe Edler could be obtained mainly because 3 of their other top d-men have NTC clauses (Hamhius, Garrison, and Bieksa). The GM came out after the season basically saying the team needs to be retooled. Edler's NTC doesn't take effect until July 1st. |

Meh, their defense is still strong without Edler, and besides, the team has reached a point where it's about time to rebuild and try again. Their key players have all reached that age where they still have good value, but won't for that many more seasons. Imagine the youth core they could build by trading the Sedins, Kesler, Edler, Hamhuis, Burrows, Hansen, Garrison, Bieksa, Lu, and Schneider. It would be real, REAL good, and I would strongly suggest that they go in that direction. |

For some reason, they seemed to use Hamhius on the point on the PP from the few games I saw this season. I'm not sure why they would be shopping either, but sometimes teams just sour on a guy for whatever reason. I think if he gets dealt, it will right around the draft. As long as the Flyers don't trade G, Voracek, Coots, or the first round pick for him, I'm all for acquiring Edler. |

Possible, just not sure he's as talented as Simmonds. |

He might not be. Of all their defensemen, he's at the top of the list of guys I'd keep. |

Certainly up to this point, I can't say he will be as effective as Simmonds. However, I believe McGinn has some of the traits as Simmonds. Like most others, I like Simmonds, but if he needs to be traded for Edler so be it.

I agree. His game lends itself to being a top 6 player. Except the kings can stick big bodies anywhere in their lineup and it works fine. That sutter is a damn good coach |

I'd certainly be very open to giving McGinn a shot to make the team.
I agree with your stance exactly. Not looking to trade Simmonds as much as I'd be looking to land Edler. If I could get Edler for Hartnell, I'd much prefer that than Simmonds. |

From Vancouver's perspective, it certainly makes sense to have interest in a gritty, go to the net winger like a Simmonds or Hartnell to skate with the Sedins. I'm not a Canucks fan, but outside of Kesler not exactly a bunch of gritty forwards in the top 6.
I think the only reason Edler would be available is because of his lack of a NTC until July 1st. To include another d-man with a high salary cap, may get scuttled by the player. Also, Edler may represent the finesse player that Nonis is trying to limit on his roster. |
