Meh, their defense is still strong without Edler, and besides, the team has reached a point where it's about time to rebuild and try again. Their key players have all reached that age where they still have good value, but won't for that many more seasons. Imagine the youth core they could build by trading the Sedins, Kesler, Edler, Hamhuis, Burrows, Hansen, Garrison, Bieksa, Lu, and Schneider. It would be real, REAL good, and I would strongly suggest that they go in that direction. - JAKEw1234

Just curious, if a deal centered around Simmonds for Edler, but to complete the deal the Flyers had to swap first rounders with the Canucks in this year's draft, should they do it? |

Nope. Where we are now gives us a good possibility at a 1st line forward or a top 2 defenseman. I can't see the same happening in the mid 20s or wherever vancouver's pick is. |

I would probably do it because Edler is 27 and the team is making this trade believing they are acquiring a top pairing d-man to take over the Kimmo role for the next 5 years or more. Also historically, the Flyers have drafted very well in the 20's finding talent in the first round.
Personally, I would rather swap first rounders then give away second rounder instead. I'm looking to keep draft picks in quantity and would be more willing to give up some slots in the first round if needed to make the trade happen. |

would rather give 2nd and keep number 11. We have a good track record in the 20's, sure. But we don't usually pick below 20, so when we do it's pretty good. Last player we picked below #20 was Sean Couturier at #8 and he's got elite prospect status. If we trade for Edler, than right around when Pulock/Zadorov will be coming into their prime will be around when Edler is in his decline. It'll work more smoothly imo. |

i think i'm in the same boat. they keep talking about how deep this draft is... if they believe that it seems moving back would be the preferable move |

It's still not the 2003 draft. The talent will think out by the 20's, even the 2003 draft did. By swapping from 11 to the mid 20's we are going from picking a top 2 dman or 1st line forward to a 2nd/3rd line forward or #6-#4 dman. So not worth it. In normal drafts, being between #15-#5 means you have a small chance at finding elite talent. In this draft I would call it a good chance. We must leave our youth core as intact as possible, and we must leave our first rounder alone. |

I think I would strongly consider it, as they'd only be dropping 8 spots....that said, I think that Simmonds for Edler is one of those JvR/Schenn type deals that really benefit both sides and fill big needs each way |

Actually, Vancouver's pick will be 19th overall. Draft order for playoff teams is based on both playoff finish & regular season record. The 8 teams eliminated in the first round get picks 15-22, even if there's playoff teams with worse regular season records that advance to round two.
The order of the first round losers is based on regular season record. So, the Isles are at 15, followed by Minnesota, Washington, Toronto and then the Canucks. |
